Tried and tested: Popham salon, Oxford

18 Feb 2017

Can’t say I’ve ever done a hair review – until this one – where I had my hair cut at one salon and then legged it up to a second salon for my colour but you’ll find out why I did it in a bit.

But let me introduce the salons, those of Popham Hairdressing, an Oxford institution of over 30 years, the original based in the gorgeous little road of North Parade just off the Banbury Road in the centre of the city (the pic above)  and the second, more recent addition in South Parade, Summertown.

Hairbox – she’ll do your up-do!

31 Jan 2017

Gawd bless the brilliant Hairbox, the tiny hair salon that’s, er, literally a boxroom on Marlow High Street, and happens to be home to the supercool, talented Carol Baxter.

Size is important in Hairbox (isn’t it everywhere?), where Carol gives clients the one-to-one private VIP treatment, washing the hair, bringing coffee, proferring small Tiffany jewellery gifts (no not really but it would be a nice touch Carol) and doing the cut and colour all herself.

New year, new you, new barnet!

9 Jan 2017

From time to time I have fantasies of cutting my hair short and edgy and cool and dying it blonde but I know I’ll just end up looking that bloke from Erasure. So I stick to what know – dark hair, and a lengthy bob that’s long enough to look feminine but not so straggly that it starts to look witchy (trust me, it happens). By asking for the same thing again and again, it’s like my creme brulee test in a restaurant – a technical challenge who can do the classic best.

A fantastic colour job at Gatsby & Miller, Amersham

10 Oct 2016

It’s been a while since the Muddy barnet was tamed, and who better to Scissorhand it into shape than Gatsby & Miller, winners of the Muddy Award for Best Salon earlier this year?

This Amersham-based salon has been around since 2011 but it’s clearly hit its stride over the last year – hot on the heels of the Muddies has come the Salon Business Award for Ultimate Large Salon of the Year 2016, so bravo them, and on my experience here it’s clearly well-deserved.

Tried & Tested: Matthew Clulee hair salon, Oxford

11 Aug 2016

Given the amount I have my hair bouffed and coiffed, it’s bizarre that I’ve tried out so few hairdressers in central Oxford, so it’s been with much pleasure and curiosity that my latest hair review is Matthew Clulee, who actually has two salons, a New York loft-style one in Ship Street, the other across the way in St Michael’s St.

My appointment was in Ship St, and shall we start by saying, nice use of the neon?

Tried & Tested: a lovely new (ish) hair salon in Henley

6 May 2016

There are so many reasons to love Henley, but if the river, museum, shops, indie cinema, festivals every flippin month and the natural beauty of the area aren’t enough, here’s another one. Elements Henley opened just last year on Bell St in this lovely bay fronted building as the town’s only Aveda salon, and it’s been getting great reviews. Sarah in Muddy Berkshire has been sneaking across the county borders for some time to go there (!) and I heard from several other moles that it’s very good so no surprise that I’ve been down to check it out.

Muddy snip: Lifestyle hair salon, Aylesbury

20 Apr 2016

Do you like your salons posh or practical? I veer wildly, probably because I do get to check out quite a range of hair salons, and can see the benefits of both. Recently I tried out Lifestyle salon on Aylesbury High St, a small salon that you might miss a few doors down from the more overtly glitzy Toni & Guy, but more fool you (and me – I’ve used that T&G for years!), because what Lifestyle lacks in pavement appeal, it makes up for once you step through the door.

Snip snip: Muddy tries Abstract Hairdressing (Beaconsfield)

14 Feb 2016

The one thing that’s a dead cert when I go the hairdresser’s is that I’ll need a dye job. My hair is now Fifty Shades of Grey, a hue alluring only to the over eighties, and so a salon’s colour credentials are right at the top of my checklist. Abstract Hairdressing in Beaconsfield boasts three – THREE! – Master Colourists, the highest qualification you can get in the UK. Plus owner Hani recently won the Sassoon Professional Image of the Year, and of course they won Best Hair Salon at the Muddy Awards 2015.

Turban tales

12 Dec 2015

Bonza idea for hairwashers! I came across Lizzie, owner of urbanTurban two weeks ago in Beaconsfield, and am wowed, kazoomed and generally gobsmacked with her product. urbanTurban is beautifully packaged, and like most of the best ideas, also gloriously simple.

I have never, ever been one of those people who can wrap a post bath/shower towel over the Muddy hair without it tumbling down. I mean, why is so goddam difficult?

Muddy cut: Nevrus Hair, Woodstock

1 Dec 2015

Unless you have ‘the one’, the hairdresser you’ve been to forever, who knows the vagaries of your barnet inside and out, up and down, it can be a bit disheartening when it’s time to have a chop. So many salons to choose from, and a risk every time.

I spend a lot of time behind the scenes on Muddy checking out loads of salons (how do they keep popping up?
