Vanbrugh House Hotel, Oxford

Muddy says: An elegant boutique hotel in St Michael St, bang in the centre of Oxford, with all mod cons and friendly staff.

If you’re looking for a chic boutique in the centre of Oxford put Vanbrugh House Hotel onto your list. Just behind the main shopping street, it’s all about the honeystoned 18th century exteriors, roll top baths and huuuuuge beds.

The hotel was partly designed by John Vanbrugh, recognised for his daring architectural style, not to mention that other small building of note he managed to scribble down on paper, Blenheim Palace.

The Vanbrugh Hotel won’t blow you away with its size – it’s intimate and bijou, and there’s no dinner service (but who cares, you’ll want to go out around the corner and eat anyway!). What it does have is 22 charming rooms and stylish suites, a friendly informal setting, and all the high tech stuff that customers now expect – complementary Wi-Fi, Nespresso coffee machines, rainfall showers and fine Egyptian cotton bed linen.
