No dinosaurs – but plenty of spooky masks

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Art & Museums features here.

A quick warning to anyone daft like me who rocks up to a museum without checking the website beforehand.

I went yesterday to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History expecting to wow my 3 year old with dinosaur skeletons. Mais non, that bit of the museum is closed due to roof repairs.

So we ended up in the Pitt Rivers Museum next door which is, of course, jam-packed with all sorts of crazy curiosities and some immensely beautiful objects too. It’s a real Victorian throwback, with heavy old glass cabinets, strange artefacts from distant lands and no room to throw a cat (let alone stuff it).  I kind of felt thrilled and claustrophic at the same time.

Handed a torch, my 3-year-old would have been happy shining it at the Financial Times for an hour so peering into these cabinets or through floor grills or into strange dark draws of masks (below) was ecstasy for him.

Can't remember what this is, but it's scary.

Still no cafe at the museum – a massive oversight as it’s an easy way to generate funds – so if you want coffee and cake, it’s over to St Giles where you’ll keel over with the choice. Any suggestions for good spots to eat, help poor starving museum visitors by commenting below!
