It's here! The John Lewis Christmas ad has launched with the Rocket Man as its secret weapon for 2018 - but has it hit orbit or crash landed? You decide!

OK – it’s HERE! The brand new John Lewis Christmas ad has been revealed this morning (isn’t it amazing how we all wait for it every year?!).

If you don’t already know, the 2018 film has reeled in Elton John in one of the biggest coups, like, ever.

I’m not going to spoil the ad for you by giving you my opinion on it (yet – obvs I have one!). First of all – what do you think? Let me know in the comment box below, I’m all ears!

Hang on, this is just a preview for the new movie ‘Rocketman’ about Elton John’s life, which is out in 2019, rather than the John Lewis ad – isn’t it?!

Well… nice little tribute to & for Elton John but not very relatable to JL customers.

Is that their Xmas ad? More like a promo for another of Elton’s farewell tours. Marginally better than M & S but that was very down market. Certainly wouldn’t make me beat a path to High Wycombe.

How much did John Lewis pay for that advert? Can they afford it when their profits are down? It just looks like a promotional video for Elton johns farewell tour in 2020

The message behind the ad is great but it’s a bit subtle, unlike Elton John. Don’t get me wrong, he’s an amazing performer and he’s been going for many years but I’m not sure it’s the right subject for a Christmas ad. Mind you, with the price of anything from John Lewis, I’d definitely want it to last a lifetime! Overall I’d give it 3/10 for a Christmas ad.

I agree with Sue and Rachel. The ad doesn’t inspire me.

No – didn’t like it! I recently heard how much the big stores spend on their Christmas adverts – money that could be better spent/donated elsewhere …after all, we watch the advert, then go and purchase everything from Amazon anyway!!

Not a fan of Elton John. But love this song. And this ad. It’s made me think about what I can get for my children in a totally different way. Even though what my son would probably love most is a load of skins for Fortnite. Anyhow. What would I know. It’s not like I work in advertising or anything.

(Oh! I do! Ask Mr Stretton what he thinks).

it doesn’t feel Christmasy at all! 🙁 it feels more like an Elton documentary add

Have I missed something? What’s this got to do with John Lewis?

JL are about to make LOTS of people redundant, my friend being one of them so unless Elton did this advert out of the kindness of his heart I think it’s a kick in the teeth the amount JL would have paid him when so many people are going to be out of a job. However I do like the meaning behind the advert.

    I think it’s lovely!
    Really nice!
The ad goes quite deep into the idea of giving something special to someone which then could change their life. Good marketing

Feels like a plug for his upcoming film. I’m very sentimental normally but even I wasn’t moved by this. A bit too indulgent for a big ego for me, sorry. I do love Elton John; Genius, but they should have made it a ‘collage’ of lots of artists and dreams coming true, to strike a chord (sorry!) with a wider audience. That’s my humble opinion anyway.

I didn’t know John Lewis sell pianos!
Joking aside love Elton but didn’t work for me.

It’s a beautiful ad – nostalgic and brings back memories of the most beautiful and cherished present you ever received. And to have Elton doing this – WOW! He’s one of the biggest stars for this country! Well done John Lewis – it certainly worked for me:+))))))))

    This is telling me

I do not need to go to John Lewis to buy presents / gifts.

Your gift is your talent, we each have one , do what you love to do to the best of your ability, and shine. How many people benefit from the pleasure of Elton’s talent gift ?

Sorry, very unimpressed with using one of the richest pop stars in the world in a JL Christmas ad, rather removes the true meaning of Christmas.

Don’t like it at all, more like a trailer for the up-coming bio-film about him, and everyone knows he’s been estranged from his elderly mother for years; wont even speak to her-so the schmaltzy mum and son bit at the end is incredibly distasteful for his real life mum to have to watch; maybe that’s why he looks rather embarressed in the final shot-very hypocritical! Bring back the boxer dog on the trampoline I say!!

Elton John is the greatest…..John Lewis is my favourite shop so why am I not impressed with this long awaited Chritmas offering?
Too much hype and not enough delivered……and I bet It cost a bomb
Please come up with something ready special next year…..

Didn’t Elton and his mum famously have a bitter falling out? Feels very contrived. They shouldn’t have made Elton the subject but parents and children generally and just used the soundtrack which is undeniable great (might have saved some budget too). Surely Christmas is about the gift of life, not a mega rich, aging rock star who fell out with his mum and now has regrets? What it has to do with John Lewis I have no idea!
