BEAUTY: wrinkle buster at Elle The Beauty Box

ellebeautybox-1397x430

I take my hat off to beauticians and hairdressers – they’re such massively competitive businesses, often with four or five rivals in the same town. And we’re a fickle lot aren’t we? One less than perfect cut and we take our custom elsewhere; one facial that doesn’t have the latest technology attached and we’re searching out alternatives.

Elle The Beauty Box in Amersham has a beauty salon and hairdressers under the same roof, added to which it’s hidden off the main high street in a courtyard,  so the owner must have nerves of steel!

The hair salon has been around since 1972 (!), but the beauty salon side of things is relatively new, having launched in April last year, and they’ve done a really good job on it. There’s a separate entrance (see the black barn door in the photo above), masses of natural light not just in the main atrium but in the treatment rooms which is a big plus for me. The lovely old beams give the building character, AND the three rooms themselves are large, which is another big tick for your resident ever-so-slight claustphobe.

Wrinkle blaster!

Wrinkle blaster!

I had a treatment with Lesley, a 90 minute Environ Active Vitamin Facial which sounds a lot more passive than it was! I had originallly booked for a regular facial but the allure of trying something I’d not heard of before, that promised brilliant zappy-wrinkle results got the better of me (sooooooo shallow I know).

First thing to say is that this treatment is not massively relaxing – if you want to drift off into your happy place and pretend Jamie Dorman is tickling his feather duster around your face this is not for you. The vitamins are ‘active’ but so is the Environ probe, pushing vitamins A, C and antioxidant pals into the lower levels of the skin using sound waves and small electrical impulses that tickle at best and pinch a bit at worst. But if the treatment is non-invasive and backed by science, I’m all for it. After one treatment I could see a difference, so I’m guessing if you go the whole hog and book several you’ll be on the cover of Teen Vogue in no time!

Look, no wrinkes! Um, nearly.

I could have had a little chill out in the relaxation room, but I had a blow dry to fit in, so I bombed on down to the main salon – large, square, and attractive, and on the day I visited, quiet, but they deserve to be busier because I had a fantastic bonce dry (if I say so myself) but possibly the most attractive hairdresser on the entire planet. Wowsa Meliza. I so want to be you.

As it happened I did manage to zip up to the relaxation room, because I ordered lunch that came across the road from former Muddy cafe finalist Seasons Deli and sat at the little table and chair up there in peace.

It’s a neutral, sweetly appointed space, a good extra to utilise if you’re having a full day of treatments or if your treatments straddle lunch. And actually the whole experience was a good one. The beauty salon manages to avoid market town chintziness by dint of its light and space, but seems small enough to care about its customers. Muddy likes.

Environ treatment £55 for 60 mins (3 areas) or £75 for 90 mins (10 areas).
