From brunette to redhead *eek!*
Whats a girl to do when she finds herself in a midlife crisis? Hit the colour bottle, thats what!
Having started a middle-aged hair crisis earlier this year with my first dip into blonded ombré waters, I decided to continue my experimentation with colour, and where better than the multi-award-winning Anne Veck salon in Oxford, whose eponymous owner has the orange and pink hair to prove her colouring chops? This haircut and colour is one I made earlier – August in fact! – so I’m back to brunette at the mo, but hey, it was fun being a red head while it lasted…
THE BRIEF: To go from ombré tips to punky orange and keep it daring and trendy rather than defaulting back to a normal bob.
Two minutes over the Magdalen Bridge in central Oxford up St Clement’s, the salon has a funkily idiosyncratic feel, with neon uplighters, a huge central circular seat and a lot of French accents knocking around – Anne is French and so are the majority of her staff. There’s a second salon in Bicester (both have excellent eco-creds) but there’s no doubting this is the flagship store. Awards won in the last two years include Style Master International Winner 2016 and Southern Hairdresser of the Year 2016 and Tribu-te Paris overall winner 2017.
HOW THEY DID IT
For this cut I was put in the capable hands of Pierre (above), so French he had to have Anne translate exactly what I wanted and explain the more technical aspects of the colour. Pas de problème, because I had a good feeling about Pierre, a hunch that was borne out a few weeks later when he won the 2017 Young Talent Tribu-te Paris Award.
This is what he did in terms of the cut and colour (translated by Anne).
The cut: For the cut we opted for a long slightly graduated bob, which suited Hero’s fine hair. We styled it with a wave, a very modern style that you could see on the catwalks at Fashion Week’s AW18 on the models Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner.
The colour: Hero wanted to jazz up her colour but to keep it low maintenance. We opted for a balayage technique which gave light ends but kept her root darker, closer to her natural colour. On her roots we applied a dark brown rich chestnut, then used a soft bleach on the ends to achieve the lighter ends. We then toned the whole thing with a rich copper. The dark colour on the roots brings out the intensity of Hero’s blue eyes and the copper is a touch of fun.
Wanna see it? Mon dieu, that’s better!
THE COST: You can definitely save yourself 15% on city centre cut and colours by zipping over Magdalen Bridge to Anne Veck. A cut with Anne herself is £65; full head of colour with Anne starts at £89.
