Muddy cut: Nevrus Hair, Woodstock

Unless you have ‘the one’, the hairdresser you’ve been to forever, who knows the vagaries of your barnet inside and out, up and down, it can be a bit disheartening when it’s time to have a chop. So many salons to choose from, and a risk every time.

I spend a lot of time behind the scenes on Muddy checking out loads of salons (how do they keep popping up? It’s like there are more hair salons than people!), but only feature the ones I really think of are interest or value to readers. Without a shadow of a doubt, I’ll happily add Nevrus Hairdressing in Woodstock to that select list.

It’s a small, elegant salon on Woodstock’s pretty Market Street, with a large front window that bathes the modern interior with light. Nevrus himself used to work at the much-respected Mahogany in Oxford, before setting up with his own private clients, and before long it was time to get a salon. And it was Kirsty, who worked with Nevrus at Mahagony, who cut my hair. Here she is, looking well funky. I don’t know about you but I get a lot of confidence from a hairstylist who can rock a fringe like this.

Why can't I be this cool?

Why can’t I be this cool?

The colourist Simon, a total sweety, sorted out my greys (OMG, so many of the buggers these days) and I have to say that it’s lasted better than any colour I’ve had for ages. I went dark again this time after flirting with some lighter tones, and six weeks later it’s still holding up brilliantly.

Colour... Cut... Blow..

Colour… Cut… Blow… and…

There are no gimmicks at this salon, no hand massages, vibrating seats and all that malarkey, but instead there is a feeling of some serious follicular talent and a pleasing mix of rural approachability and a more urban credibility. I’d go back again in a flash.

Prices are reasonable I’d say – £55 for a cut and blow dry with Nevrus or Kirsty, and a semi-permanent for £49. Children’s cuts are a bit steep – £25 for under 12s – so I’d personally steer clear of that side of things, but it’s up to you, maybe you appreciate your children more than I do mine!

They do the whole gamut of hair, from dos up to perming, straightening and highlights, so if you’re near to Woodstock, definitely check them out, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I literally fly back from CA to get my hair cut by Nevrus (after following him from Oxford to Woodstock) – it will take a lot more than that flight to make me move to someone else!

Now that’s dedication! Don’t blame you though, he’s great. x
