TRY THIS: A lava shell massage
Everyone has their favourite beauty treatment, the default that they go back to time and time again. Mine is definitely, 100%, without question, the hot stone massage. I’ve been stooping at my computer as a journo for over 20 years which has given me a collection of shoulder knots so gnarly and grisly that I always feel very sorry for the masseuse giving me the treatment – often so perky and hopeful at the beginning of the treatment, resigned to defeat by the end.
My back has been particularly tight recently – all the Awards build up and work and kids and just life – so I thought it was time to try a different option. Lava Shells. Have you used them? They’ve been around a while and I always thought they were a bit gimmicky so gave them the meh treatment, but what do I know?! They offer them at the well established Lavender and Stone salons (two in Bucks, two in Herts), so trooper that I am, I went to the Bourne End salon to give it a whirl.
Turns out that the lava shells (recycled natural Tiger Clam shells from the Phillapines, thanks for asking) are as smooth as hot stones on the skin but hold onto their heat for over an hour, meaning that your therapist can provide a continuous body massage without clattering stones or having to spend time replacing them as they slide off your back (does that happen to you or just me?).
The therapist at Lavender and Stone was lovely, very zen and centred and really good at handling those little shells of joy. I woke myself up with the Muddy snort at some point so I obviously drifted off, and the room was tantilisingly dark and warm. I could have stayed there all afternoon.
I can’t pretend the back knots have gone – I truly don’t think they will until I put down the computer and retire – but I definitely enjoyed the more seamless massage they offer
Lavender & Stone, lava shell massage, 60 mins £61.50; 90 mins £82.00.
