Girl power

Muddy celebrates the Women's Suffrage Centenary by saluting the sisters who dared to break barriers.

So this is the week we salute those who, in 1918, first won British women the vote. 100 years down the line, there’s still plenty to play for (#MeToo didn’t come out of thin air) but today let’s get out the klaxon, put on some lippy and raise a toast to some of the trailblazers who got us this far. It’s not a definitive list clearly, just a snapshot of some remarkable femmes over the last 100 years. How many do you recognise – and who would you have put on our pretty collage?

From left to right:

Jessica Ennis, Rosa Parks, J.K Rowling, Madonna, Malala Yousafzai, Helen Mirren, Maya Angelou, Coco Chanel, Valentina Tereshkova, Karen Brady, Billie Jean King, Iris Murdoch, Marie Curie, Jane Austen, Vivienne Westwood, Sigrid, Emily Wilding Davison & Betty Boothroyd.

I was 7 when I met Valentina Tereshkova in a hotel we were staying at in Bulgaria. It was our first holiday abroad and she was such an incredible woman. We were staying at the same hotel on the Black Sea. She was treated like royalty.
