Let the winds blow – it’s Mills Weekend!

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Architecture features here.

Pitstone Windmill, Buckinghamshire

Every week for years I’ve driven past Great Haseley windmill, a lovely ruin of a mill prominent on the Oxfordshire landscape, wondering about its past, and also it’s future (it’s in the process of being privately renovated).

Wheatley windmill, Oxfordshire

Now it turns out I can go and see this windmill and as many others as I fancy in the area next weekend, because it’s National Mill Weekend from  May 12-13th, where the nation’s mills, some privately owned, and many still in working order, are open to the public. For children and excitable adults like me, this is nearly as brilliant as a trip to the moon or a house made of sweets (come on, I did say nearly).

Mapledurham watermill, Oxfordshire. The last working watermill on the River Thames

Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire have their fair share of wind and watermills, but there’s also a comprehensive county-by-county list here. It’s the perfect opportunity to go to an area you’ve never been to please let me know where you go, what you see, and if you find anything good enough to make it into Muddy Stilettos!

I went inside the Great Haseley Mill last year and was so surprised at how beautiful the renovations were. It’s a quality job and the guy heading up the renovation was so interesting and knowledgeable. They are clearly working on the Cap at the moment which was the most expensive part of the renovation so it will be very interesting to see how they are progressing. The view from the top was pretty impressive too.
