Fantastic art exhibition in North Oxford

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Art features here.

Sarah Wiseman - Catherine Rayner Donovan and Dolores
I popped into the lovely Sarah Wiseman Gallery in Oxford’s Summertown a while ago and Sarah gave me a sneaky preview of some of the paintings and prints of an upcoming exhibition by the much-admired Catherine Rayner.

Then I promptly forgot all about it, only to realise today that the exhibition has actually already started. So I’d better tell you about it now!

If you don’t already know her, Rayner is an award-winning artist, illustrator and author. Her first book ‘Augustus and His Smile’ won her ‘Best New Illustrator Award’ in the Book Trust Early Years Awards in 2006, and one of four nominations for the Kate Greenaway prize. Catherine won the prize in 2009 for her book ‘Harris Finds His Feet’.

Her new exhibition, ‘Hazel and Friends’ continues her fascination with animals and nature. As you can see from the pics here, her work is really beautiful – nostalgic and innocent somehow, a sort of updated Beatrix Potter I always think. Her prints and paintings would equally well for (extremely lucky) children, or more adult spaces.

Her shows are always sell-outs so if you have a spare hour, go and have a look. The Oxford Wine Cafe opened just last month door (I’m yet to try it out so if anyone has beaten me to it, let me know what you think), Liscious interiors is opposite and you can placate any irritable children with Barefoot Books at the end of the road. Afternoon sorted!
