Helen Mirren stars in ‘The Audience’
Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Culture features here.
There are some plays that sound so incredible and exciting that you just have to be part of them.
(Caveat: Mr Muddy sleeping through Kevin Spacey’s The Iceman Cometh. But there’s always one isn’t there?).
So when I heard booking was open for The Audience I thought you’d want know about it. How does Stephen Daldry directing Helen Mirren in a play written by The Queen screenwriter Peter Morgan sound?
Mirren is reprising the role of HRH, and the play will focus on the weekly audiences the Queen has been having with her Prime Ministers for the past 60 years. It’s entirely fictional, as no-one knows what happens in these sessions – they may be playing ping pong and knocking back the G&T for all we know – but if anyone can catch the drama and humour and absurdity of these meetings, it’s Peter Morgan.
The other cast members are yet to be announced so in the meantime any comedy suggestions for Cameron and Brown much appreciated!
The Audience starts its run at the Gielgud Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue from 15 Feb – 15 June 2013. Book early for your royal appointment.
