Waterperry Gardens in half-term: an A-Z of fun

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Culture features here.

Waterperry gardens february 2013 065I went over to Waterperry Gardens today for a double whammy of February snowdrops (absolutely lovely as you can see) and half term activities for the kids in the garden.

The test was to find an A-Z of kid-friendly things hidden in the gardens. Sophisticated it was not – laminated A4 sheets of jigsaws or deflated elephants in trees mostly. But give a child a clipboard and a pencil and a sniff of a prize and they’re all over it.

We walked all around the garden, right down the apple orchards, through the boxed gardens and it was a good hour zipping around. The gardens themselves are just starting to come to life, with the crocuses out and daffs ready to roll any time now.

Once you’ve meandered around the garden, there is a lovely gallery shop with prints, jewellery and pottery, where I found some fab vases and bowls. Unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to take a photo (!) so you’ll just have to take my word for it until I can get my hands on an image. There’s also a gift barn and a cafe on site, as well as the garden centre and museum,  so if you haven’t been before there’s plenty to occupy all ages.

Prepare to draw breath sharply when you’re asked to pay £6.50 to go around the gardens (in WINTER!!), plus a more reasonable £2 per child, and unless you’re starving hungry, don’t fall into the trap of further feeding the Waterperry beast when the children’s prize happens to be a flapjack, conveniently situated in the cafe!

Our trip out was an undoubted success, but I’d say it’s a maximum 2 hour excursion so you might want to tie it in with lunch at the fab The Clifden Arms in neighbouring village Worminghall (about 5 minutes drive). Happy days!

PS Off to the theatre tonight to see The 39 Steps – will let you know if it’s worth seeing later. Over and out.
