Scandi-chic garden cabins by Ayr. We’re in love. 💕
Still hankering after a garden office or cabin? We’ve found a brilliant company that’s raised the bar on design with its Scandic-Chic aesthetic. And guess what? It’s local!
A year-long lockdown can give you a new perspective on your house: too small, too exposed, too few spaces where you can barricade yourself in with a pot of Ben & Jerry’s. We’ve all surveyed our homes in the past 12 months and felt that, yeah actually, an extra room or two of our own wouldn’t go amiss. Forget extensions – your local builder is booked up until 2024 – it’s been garden office/living spaces that have been booming as we try to keep working while breathing deep into the shrubbery and hiding from the children.
I’ve been umming for ages about building something in my garden. Maybe an office. Maybe a cabin so my 18-year-old has more privacy and we can rent it out on weekends. Maybe a gym so I can do Yoga with Adrienne once every six months. If you’re thinking along the same lines as me, you’re going to love Ayr Cabins, my latest find – an awesome company just outside Thame that’s doing something unique and supercool.
With its origins in the Barr Group, well known around these parts as construction, carpentry and kitchen experts with a rep for quality, the buildings are so chic and gorgeous and design-led that I’m working out the square footage as I write (not literally, that would be silly – let’s just say I’m keen).
The company offers four suggested designs, though there’s plenty of option for bespoke strokes too. There’s Fokus (the smallest cabin – think solo office or small gym); Micro (family of four with kitchenette and living room); Office (does what it says on the tin, though you can personalise the size spec) and then the all singing-all dancing Family cabin (12m x 5m), which can comfortably house a clan of six – six, I tell you!! – seriously stoking up the wow factor and getting rid of extraneous family members in one fell swoop. Aren’t they, frankly, stunning? They look better than my actual house which is bit shameful.
There’s a strong Scandi aesthetic – birch ply cladding inside, clever cabinetry and clean modern lines that for me moves these cabins into more exciting ground than the ubiquitous, log-cabin ‘Soho Farmhouse’ look. I also like the fact that there’s a unique, bespoke element at play with Ayr, with a dedicated design consultant part of the process to make sure the space works for you.
So if you want an office in the week but a spare room at the weekend, an inviting hideaway or a personal gym, Ayr Cabins ensure that the design and materials are right for you. Whether ply dyed dark for a warm, comforting vibe, or a different kind of flooring or wall cladding option, that’s possible too. They also offer an interior design package – so you can put the entire project into Ayr’s hands. I think we can agree they’re just a leetle bit more stylish and considered than the average garden retreat company, right?!
Prices start at £17k + VAT for a Fokus Cabin, moving to £25k + VAT for an Office Cabin, £48k + VAT for a Micro Cabin and £90k + VAT for what is effectively a whole house with sustainable materials and proper building specs – an all-singing all-dancing (all-ready-to-rent?) option of the Family cabin.
There are loads more gorgeous pics on the website, well worth checking out here for garden-build inspo – get it up for summer ready for the end of lockdown. Sleepover at yours?
