Muddy says: owner David worked directly under Vidal Sassoon in London before he and wife Shirley created their own three salon brand in Oxford. Thirty years on, Popham is a surefire way to TLC your tresses.
If Muddy Stilettos is all about the urban best decanted to the countryside, Popham – run by husband and wife team Shirley and David Popham – fits that bill perfectly. David started out in hairdressing at 15 years old as an apprentice in the West End and ended up working for Vidal Sassoon in the Sixties and Seventies, cutting the tresses of rock stars, before heading off to do his own thing. Thirty years on they have three salons in Oxford, the original in North Parade, one of the loveliest streets in the city, the second in Summertown, and the third, most recent addition is on Little Clarendon Street. I’ve already tried out the first two already – check out my tresses!
Popham is Oxford’s only Sassoon Professional Partner, so the hairdressers attend regular training and development sessions at its Academy in London. It is also the only UK hairdressing company to be awarded Champion Investor in People so you know the team is well looked after.
Big Muddy marks for their forward-thinking ethos that includes wash basins on wheels that come to you (no need to move a muscle from your original seat!), biodegradable disposable gowns and towels, tri-angled mirrors so you can see your cut from all angles and a smart Hoover attachment hidden in the floor that tidies chopped hair.
