The Ultimate Picture Palace
The Ultimate Picture Palace (UPP) is Oxford’s only truly independent cinema and one of the oldest running cinemas in the country. Opened in 1911, the cinema has gone through many hands. Most recently it was bought by Becky Hallsmith in 2011 and has since undergone a total makeover.
The wonderful art-deco auditorium has 107 (brand new!) seats and the small bar at the back serves drinks and snacks for you to take to your seats before the start of the film.
With only one screen we can afford to be picky and show only the best from mainstream films to indie fare, monthly classic seasons, as well as foreign language and British films. We also do fantastic events like sing-alongs, silent films with live music, Q&As, filmed theatrical performances such as Globe on Screen and much much more!
We don’t show adverts – just one or two trailers for upcoming films – which means the feature starts promptly at the advertised time.
We are open every day of the week for two evening screenings, with matinees on Saturday, Sunday and Thursday. We also offer
- Classic Films (Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings). Themed seasons.
- Subtitled screenings (Tuesdays, early evenings). Whenever possible our first film on Tuesdays will be that week’s main feature screening with subtitles.
- Baby Club (Thursdays, doors open at 12:00, film starts at 12:30). Lunchtime screenings exclusively for parents with babies under 1 year old.
- Dementia Friendly Screenings (First Wednesday of every month). Matinee screenings made friendly for those with dementia, their carers, friends and family.
