The cool coffee connoisseurs: Gyre & Gimble (Buckingham)
Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest cafe features here.
I was in Buckingham a while back, scouting out the nominated shops in the Muddy Awards. There are plenty of interesting shops in this revived market town, not least At Home, Moss Flowers (the Muddy Award winning florist) and Nelson St restaurant.
But I was fascinated by Gyre & Gimble, a tiny coffee shop that had made a massive splash in the town in the few months it had been open, with many nominations in the early days of the Muddy Awards.
It’s the sort of place you’d expect to see in Soho. High on cool, low on tables, staff who have a ‘look’ and work it to the max, and of course fantastic coffee with which to entice anyone who doesn’t rate the above high on his/her list of priorities.
I love the fact that it kind of bridges the two opposing elements of Buckingham – the youthful side of the town with the university kids, the tattoo parlours, the slight rough-and-ready vibe with the more genteel, middle-class middle-aged contingent. I guess that’s what the best coffee shops do anyway, create a mutual space for disparate sets of people.
Also, I’m so excited to see a place that’s confident enough to be different, because it’s so much easier just to be like everyone else isn’t it? I love the Victorian apothecary vibe, the vintage touches, I like the fact it’s been done up creatively on a budget. I love everything about it!
But if you happen to be that way visiting Stowe Landscape Gardens, Bletchley Park or Claydon House and have time for a half an hour mooch around Buckingham, it’s definitely worth checking out.
