The Old Flight House Café, nr Bicester
You probably don’t need another excuse to visit The Old Flight House, the Muddy Award-winning vintage emporium in Weston-on-the-Green, just south of Bicester, but I’m feeling kind so I’ll give you one anyway.
I had a meeting at Bicester Village on Tuesday morning (by which I mean a long coffee with a friend at the lovely new Farm Shop eaterie – so sue me!) and decided to zip over afterwards to OFH, as it’s only about 10 minutes from the Village.
I spent a good hour floating around, dreaming of buying loads of stuff and taking way too many photos as usual. But then the Muddy stomach started to rumble and the OFH cafe was rather attractively situated bang in the middle of the emporium, so, er, that was that. I wasn’t holding out massive hope for a brilliant meal really – I think cafes within shops can be a bit hit and miss can’t they. But well well well, what a pleasant surprise.
Amid the more expected elements of the menu – the jacket potatoes, sandwiches etc – there’s a funky daily specials list and some fantastic salads.
I had the veggie quesadilla with soured cream, guacamole and leaves, and seriously, it was sooooo good. Enough chilli to give it a slight kick but not to overpower, and beautifully presented.
Being piggy, I also ordered the chipotle chilli chicken on quinoa, and that was delicious too.
By the time I’d reached dessert the Muddy rumble had totally, utterly subsided, but I’m nothing if not devoted to the cause of becoming Plus Size by 2017, so persevered with a slab of carrot cake. I had a cake last time I was at the OFH and thought it might have been a lucky one-off, but let me tell you, in all seriousness, these cakes are outrageously good. Soft, moist, flavoursome. If this cake was wearing a bikini it’d be foxier than Kate Upton.
Any criticism? If you’re a coffee nut, the limited range of coffees on offer might lose the OFH cafe a mark and I’d like slightly flasher cutlery and napkins, but these are small niggles really. I thought it was a really great addition to the offering at the Old Flight House and it’s just made it a much more compelling trip out, not least because – oh, didn’t I mention it? – the cafe is licensed. Bubbledacious!
THE MUDDY VERDICT:
Good for: girly lunches, cake-munchers, demon-shoppers needed sustenance. Plus there’s a lovely outdoor area if you want to enjoy the sunshine.
Not for: Posh noshers. It’s a very good café, don’t expect the world!
££: Reasonable. Mostly around the £4-9 mark for mains, so plenty of spare cash to go shopping with.
