Where to eat outdoors in Bucks & Oxon – even in winter

From fairy-lit terraces to festive fire pit nights, ‘tis the season to eat ‘out out’. Grab your thermals and five of your best pals for outdoor cocktails galore.

Jacobs Inn, Wolvercote, Oxon

Jacobs Inn, Wolvercote

Have you ever seen a cosier marquee? Jacobs Inn just off Port Meadow has dressed its covered pergola to max up the Christmas cheer in time for the festive season. There’s also a new ‘substantial’ bar snacks menu including a baked camembert and pigs in blankets with apple sauce to tuck into – order 4 for £22 or 6 for £30.

The Nags Head, Great Missenden, Bucks

The Nags Head, Great Missenden, Bucks

What better place to tuck into The Nags Head’s AA rosette menu than a mega-cosy tipi with a woodburning stove and sheepskin blankets? It’s packed with fairy lights and candles for extra date night vibes, too.

Quod, Oxford, Oxon

Quod, Oxford

Hitting up the city centre for some last-minute Christmas shopping? Make a reservation at Quod to take advantage of their chic Winter Garden, which is covered and heated to keep out the chill – the ideal setting for snaffling their new Christmas party menu between six of you.

The Ivy Garden, Marlow, Bucks

Sip a Christmas cocktail or two in The Ivy Garden Marlow’s heated outdoor terrace (Spiced Pear Bellini for us, please). This is likely to be a popular option for festive bubbles, so ensure you book in advance.

The Anchor, Jericho, Oxon

Cool Jericho pub The Anchor has winter-proofed their outdoor dining area, with heaters, fire pits and plenty of twinkly fairy lights. There’s a delicious three-course Christmas menu on offer, as well as filling bar snacks and a ‘substantial meal’ option for £10.

The Jolly Cricketers, near Beaconsfield, Bucks

The heated marquee at this cosy village pub in Seer Green has had a festive makeover to match the new winter menu – pop in for a bite or a drink or two while tramping around the local countryside. Bonus: it’s dog-friendly too.

Waterfront Cafe, Wallingford, Oxon

The decking of this waterside spot is always packed out in summer thanks to the excellent views of the river, but for the winter they’ve introduced heating to their covered terrace area to keep you toasty in the cooler climes. There’s also plenty of festive hot chocolate and mulled wine to go around!

The Marlow Bar & Grill, Marlow, Bucks

The Marlow Bar and Grill

The Bar and Grill’s brand new ultra-modern all-weather terrace is fully kitted out for winter, with heat lamps, low comfy seating, candlelight and pashminas. There’s also an excellent new Festive Lunch menu to take full advantage of.

The Varsity Club, Oxford

The Varsity Club, Oxford

You don’t have to freeze your bits off to enjoy the amazing rooftop view of the dreaming spires at TVC – their roof terrace is ready with awnings, heaters and heated seats to keep you dry and thawed through. They’re currently taking bookings of up to 6, and their VIP igloo pod is available for diners all from the same bubble.

The Harrow, Bishopstone, Bucks

This Aylesbury eatery has just unveiled their new covered and heated outdoor bar and dining area, with high mounted electric heaters and a crackling log burner for maximum cosiness. It offers a full bar (so no traipsing back and forth), as well as an outdoor ‘special’ dish each week.

On a smaller scale, the Bell Inn Chearsley has a covered area for eating with heaters to keep you warm.
