9 pubs with fab gardens
Is there anything more British than a beer garden? Whether you want your green space near a river, meadow, or city, we've scoured Bucks & Oxon for the best in show.
I’ve been to a gazillions of pubs in Oxon & Bucks on Muddy duty and have drawn together this scratch list, admittedly half cut late in the evening, but hopefully with a degree of knowledge and insight. Yeah yeah, I’ve probably left some goodies off, and if you think there has been a libellous omission, genuinely please let me know – I love to hear suggestions and much as I bomb around trying out new places, you are the guys who live and breathe your local areas. I hope these suggestions help you have a wonderful weekend. Slap on the sunscreen and enjoy the view.
The Perch, Binsey
Lovely thatched pub next to Port Meadow Oxford and its meandering river. An outdoor bar, BBQ in the summer, large garden and great food. Seriously, nothing not to like.
The Old Swan, The Lee
Decent pubby food in a beautiful Chilterns spot a few miles from Great Missenden, with the perfect pub garden – it’s enormous, it has its own football pitch, it has a shedload of outdoor furniture. RELAX!
The Royal Oak, Bovington Green
Just outside Marlow, this excellent pub boasts award-winning food and a lovely outside area, complete with boules area and large enclosed gardens. Can’t go wrong.
The Fishes, Oxford
A previous Muddy Award finalist that boasts a glorious three acres not far from central Oxford. Buy a picnic from the bar and luxuriate in the sunshine.
Victoria Arms, Old Marston (Oxford)
Large sweeping gardens down to The River Cherwell in this atmospheric Oxford pub. Ideal if you want to spend the day in the city but want the midgets to roam free for a while.
The Trout at Tadpole Bridge, nr Faringdon
Stunning country Cotwold pub with lovely large garden that rolls all the way down to the banks of the Thames. Moor up and enjoy.
The Greyhound, Rotherfield Peppard
Anthony Worrall Thompson’s take on a family gastropub in South Oxfordshire is a success at every level. Clearly the food is excellent but on a sunny day there’s a mid-sized front garden with oversized Goldilocks chair, pergola and lots of seating.
The Swan, Denham
A stonker of a Georgian pub in a quintessential South Bucks village, with a large, attractive beer garden. Denham is well worth a stroll around afterwards.
The Olde Bell, Hurley
Oh alright, this one’s in Berkshire but it’s so fabulous it has special dispensation and it’s only just over the border. A lovely old pub with gorgeous child-friendly gardens, and an outdoor kitchen/ bar in a stunning waterside village. On a sunny day, walk down by the river past the locks and over bridges.
