Aylesbury is having a verrrrrrry sloooooooow renaissance. The Waterside Theatre has been totally amazing and no doubt an important factor in Waitrose popping up right next door. A GKB and Wagamama offer decent chain food next to the Odeon, and there are plans inching forward for a tart up of the central shopping area.
And that’s it. Apart from one shining beacon of indie shop brilliance that has appeared on what is surely one of the most depressingly lowbrow market squares in England. Amongst Vodafone, Costa, Go outdoors, and a plethora of seen-everywhere brands now sits The Works. I mentioned it a while ago on the blog when it first launched, and popped in with my daughter a while ago to try it out for myself, then realised last week I hadn’t told you about it. Oopsy.
While The Works unashamedly plays the kiddie card – it serves only crepes, waffles and iceceram, so is highly intoxicating to anyone under 14 – it does so with style. And let me tell you, that’s not something you can say often of Aylesbury town centre.
It’s actually a vast space, so don’t be deceived if you see the front window full, they’ll no doubt be able to find room for you as the cafe/restaurant/crepebar goes waaay back.
My daughter was not only like a pig in muck when her waffle arrived, she was like a pig performing a synchronised swimming routine in it. It was all marshmallows and chocolate and was absolutely enormous, but you can go for healthier savoury or fruity options if you’ve LOST YOUR MIND. Check out this bad boy…
I’m definitely going back with the rest of my kids, and it’s perfect for a pre-or post cinema trip, as it’s literally a two minute walk from the cinema across the square.
Give it a go and if you like it, comment on The Works’ listing, or just let us know in the comment section below. I know I always say it, but knowledge is power, peeps!
