Great little restaurant in Dinton

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Buckinghamshire features here.

La Chouette is one of those restaurants that manages to chug along despite little publicity. I’m always amazed how few people have heard of it, let alone been there for a meal, but it’s a real find.

Tucked away on Dinton’s Westlington Green (past the Manor House on the left, then wiggle around the houses), the food is phenomenal, the low-beamed setting is quaint and a little old-fashioned, and Belgian owner Frederic Desmette oozes gallic charisma or bombastic confidence, depending on whether or not you warm to him. He takes the food order, cooks and serves, and is highly likely to plonk himself down next to you while you’re eating your dessert and rattle on about the French (or even better the English) and how he’d like to ban vegetarians from his restaurant. You’ll love him or hate him, but at least you’ll have something to talk about after dinner.

A few years ago La Chouette was deathly quiet – perhaps because Frederic had at one point banned the entire village of Dinton from coming there (yes, really) – but since it had a great write up in The Daily Telegraph last year it’s generally more lively. I’ve eaten here half a dozen times and never had a dud, so give it a go and let me know what you think.

Best for: a romantic dinner, or a meal with friends. Don’t take the children, unless you want them filleted.

£££: Mid range. Wines list is comprehensive, fairly steep and indecipherably French. Frederic will steer you to a winner though.

Contact: La Chouette, Westlington Green, Dinton, Bucks HP17 8UW. Phone 01296 747422. Closed Sundays (or whenever Frederic can’t be bothered to open).

Not quite true that the entire village of Dinton was banned from La Chouette but a few were but hey that’s village life.

It is a privilege for the village to have such a fine restaurant meaning that we don’t have to go to France or Belgium to experience such sublime food.

As for the villagers of Dinton: A lot of them are banned and always will be! Trust me on this!
