Review: The Three Crowns, Askett

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Buckinghamshire features here.

I’m so excited about this restaurant that I wanted to put it straight on the blog. I’ve lived in South Bucks for 8 years, and had never ventured into The Three Crowns in Askett before (nearest town: Princes Risborough in Bucks) – but what a waste of the years.

Despite its rather conventional, red brick pub exterior, lurking within is a proper old fashioned restaurant. By which I mean, quality food above everything, exemplary and knowledgeable service by proper adult waiters – in this case, well into their Fifties.

The interior (above) is nothing to write home about – it’s presentably pubby really – but it somehow just highlights the quality of the food. The French-influenced menu includes loads of specials and amazing seafood, reflecting The Three Crowns’ speciality as the best fish restaurant for some miles. We both had panfried scallops with pancetta and pureed peas with balsamic reduction – just beautiful. Then it was full sea bream with herb stuffing, with vegetables for me and venison for S – both perfect.

£££: Two glasses of Prosecco, a bottle of red and three courses each came to £97 (without tip). It was worth every penny.

Best for: Couples or groups who are interested in good food at reasonable prices. TripAdvisor gives The Three Crowns 4.5/5 so that gives you a good idea of the calibre.

Not for: Those who like to eat in stylish, trendy spots. Anyone looking for idyllic outdoor space. Those with young children – there’s not much room in the restaurant and the menu is relatively ‘adult’. But look, your kids have to learn to debone fish some day!

I agree the Three Crowns is fantastic; another one I would highly recommend is the the Lord Nelson at Britwell Baldwin, near Watlington x

Hi Lucy, bizarrely someone told me about this restaurant the other day, so thanks for reinforcing the argument to try it out! x
