Sweet dreams

One scoop or two? OK, three it is! Dessert cafés are all the rage and your little people will love Creams in Xscape MK for its bubble waffles and Oreo-everything. Buckle in for the sugar rush.

The rise of the dessert café seems unstoppable. In addition to The Works in High Wycombe and Aylesbury, Kaspa’s in Milton Keynes, and Heavenly Desserts and Temptations in Oxford comes Cream at the Xscape MK, offering the now familiar concept of the kiddie catnip sugar rush the form of waffles, Sundaes, crepes and gelatos. It’s the ideal place for the franchise, as Xscape pulls in families with its trampoline park, i-Fly, VR and cinema.

It’s very much that Americana feel with its neon signage, skateboards on walls and mix of standard and booth seating. To me it feels slightly ‘retro design by numbers’ but my kids were entranced with it. The day we visited it was pretty quiet, but I can imagine at peak times – after a movie for example, that this place will be heaving.

I defy you to find anyone under 18 who isn’t seduced by a More Oreo bubble pop waffle or a white chocolate crépe. This business clearly knows its audience so there’s every which way with mind-boggling concoctions like bubblegum gelato (choose pink or blue) and cheesecake disco. The desserts speak for themselves really!

Once you’ve exhausted Xscape (or maybe it’s exhausted you – it’s action packed in there), you’re literally minutes away from the excellent Milton Keynes Theatre, which seems to snaffle many of the best London shows. Bletchley Park and Woburn Safari Park are both short drives too.

Good for: Kids, kids, kids. Little Muddy eyes were plate-wide at the counter. They totally loved it and would return in a heartbeat.

Not for: Adults expecting finesse. Cream has a formula for its food offering and delivers it well, but there was confusion initially as to whether we ordered at the table or the counter and service was well-intentioned but a bit haphazard.

£££: On the more expensive side of mid-range – a crepe was £4.25, the caramel and toffee retreat was £6.45 and a scoop of gelato was £2.25. Your children will love you for it though.

Creams Café, 602 Marlborough Gate, Xscape, MK9 3XS. Tel: 01908 672005.
