Pin It: A Festival of Brooches

Is it a work of art or is it a brooch? A bit of both, we reckon. This stunning sculptural silver seedpod trinket by Japanese artist Kayo Saito is part of Woodstock jeweller Woldstone Gallery‘s month-long festival of brooches. Hand-crafted one-of-a-kind pieces like this don’t come cheap – this one retails at £1400, but there is something here for every budget, with prices ranging from £75 up to £5000. A unique piece of wearable art for under £100? Sounds good to us.

Once only associated with our grandmothers’ jewellery boxes, the brooch is currently having a fashion moment, with online searches for pin brooches up 60 percent in the last six months, according to global fashion search engine Lyst. Celebrities use them to jazz up a black tux or plain dress on the red carpet – they’re a bit quirkier than a statement necklace. And us civilians here at Muddy dig their versatility – jacket lapel, handbag, scarf – all can be niftily embellished with a well-placed brooch.

Woldstone feature the work of goldsmiths Paul Preston aka Red Mole, Alan Craxford and Dorothy Hogg MBE among others, with pieces in precious metals, rare gemstones, vitreous enamel, ceramic, wood and acrylic. They’re holding a preview evening TONIGHT (Thurs 2 Mar) 5.30-8pm (with bubbly and Welsh cakes for St David’s Day) and 12-5pm on Saturday.

Woldstone Gallery, 25 Oxford St, Woodstock OX20 1TH. Tel: 01993 813000.
