Fenella’s Favourite Places
Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Celebrities features here.
Fenella Smith is a renowned ceramicist, creating elegant, whimsical designs that look as equally at home in a city townhouse or country estate. She lives in Henley with her family and dogs, and these are her favourite places in Oxon, Bucks and beyond.
Walking in Stonor
Not far from what used to be The Quince Tree in Stonor there’s some common ground at the top of a very steep hill. I often walk here with Bramble. There seems to be an impenetrable light there, even on the most gloomy of days there is a purity of light that just lifts your soul. Now and then there’s a fantastic low mist, I remember one day walking and daydreaming (I’m a terrible daydreamer!) with Bramble and in the mists I saw some deer scattering in the distance and then a horse rider galloping towards us. It was the most magical sight.
Wellington Farm Shop, Wellington Riding, Hampshire
This place is dangerous as it’s full of temptation and delight. They have a fantastic butchery section and beautiful local produce. Simon and I spend a lot of time in France, and if we’re taking the ferry it’s always necessary to stop by at Wellington for a homemade Scotch Egg and Shortbread Biscuits for the journey.
Greys Court, Henley on Thames
This National Trust property is such an enchanting place, I always used to tell my step children tales of the past when we walked around the woods at Greys Court. They’re older now so aren’t so interested in my tales of love and gallantry! All made up of course but adds to the delight of this beautiful circular walk through bluebell laden woods. In the Autumn there are an abundance of blackberries, and Bramble our dog has learned how to pick the fresh ones and not get caught on her namesake. She’s very partial to a blackberry!
FROM is basically the answer to all of my shopping needs! Especially at Christmas. This store has a truly curated feel. They really care who they are sourcing from and they find the most fantastic products. I am thrilled to be one of their suppliers – I visit them as often as I can and they’re always keen to know how the products are developing, what my working methods are and what’s happening next for the brand. A truly innovative and successful blueprint that shows how modern high retailing on the high street needs to look.
Life at Nettlebed, Nettlebed
I could quite happily move into this store and live there, it’s simply divine. They have such a wonderful for elegant and simple interiors. The stock is always evolving as well, so it provides for great inspiration. Simon and I never leave empty-handed.
