Gather & Hunt

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Delis features here.

I’ll take the lot, thanks.

Oh yes please Gather & Hunt. Not only is your name fabulous, the signage super-cool and the spot on Marlow High Street about as peachy a pozzy as you can get, but the food… *sigh*.

A morsel of Orla Kiely to complement the tasting bench upstairs

Opening the doors to a shamelessly artisan bakery/grocery/condiment/treaty shop in these buttock-clenching financial times takes some guts, but Martina the owner of Gather & Hunt is so full of enthusiasm and energy that I think she will carry the day. Six weeks after its launch, on the peeing wet morning that I visited, the small-but-perfectly formed shop was doing good business.

A magic roundabout of nibbles and condiments

Part of Gather & Hunt’s raison d’etre is that it isn’t just a local farmer’s market with walls. I love farmers markets as much as the next girl but if you’re running a store that needs to cater to shoppers’ whims, you must have all bases covered. So though Martina does source locally too, she uses producers from all over the country – wherever she can find the best quality. I took some smoked almonds from the Ludlow Nut Co. that were delicious, some  raspberry jam from Dorset and various other nibbly bits that were all quite special. Prices are on par with Waitrose broadly which seems about right.

It’s definitely worth having a gander next time you’re in Marlow, but if South Bucks is too far away from you or life is just getting in the way of your shopping habit, don’t worry – the online shop is up and running for Christmas hampers already, with the rest of the stock to follow soon.
