Cool little beauty room in Jericho, Oxford

beauty-studio-karoline

Karolina Lipinska, beauty therapist and owner The Beauty Studio, is clearly a woman doing something very right. Her therapy space is behind an anonymous door, next to a chemist and entirely hidden to the world in Jericho  (just around the corner from St Giles in central Oxford)…

… yet a steady stream of clients come for her skincare and waxing services. Karolina, let it be said, specialises in Brazilian and Hollywood waxing and is apparently a total whizz at it. I’ll try a lot of things for Muddy Stilettos – fat blaster machines, facial acupuncture, fitness classes – but just thinking about a Hollywood makes my eyes water, so I drew my line at reviewing that one.

However, I did go along to assess Karolina’s other big calling card, her signature Environ collagen power facial – The Beauty Studio is the exclusive partner to Environ in Oxford, a brand I know and like as unusually in a sea of youth-enhancing, plumping, blah-di-blah products Environ actually does have some solid science to back up its claims.

But first the workspace. Once you’ve done a Mr Ben and walked through the big wooden double door and up the stairs (or travelled in the rickety metal lift)

you reach a pleasant communal reception space that works for a range of businesses on the floor. It’s all pretty slick and modern actually and the last thing you’d expect from the door on the main road.

Karolina’s room is standard-luxe I’d say – well-appointed and with no real design surprises though that lamp through out some lovely ambient light and the faux rococo mirror was a feminine touch.

Usually therapists quietly tutt as they have to chuck on more products to counteract my thirsty skin, but Karolina was very kind about my too-much-red-wine-not-enough-water skin. Maybe she could be nice, knowing how effective her Environ power facial was going to be! This treatment included a full cleanse, exfoliation nutritional serum using sound waves to drive it deep into the lower layers, and a massage and moisturiser to bust the wrinkles.

Here I am post-treatment, pulling a strange face (*sigh*) wearing my fave Winser London cashmere stripy. Guess how old I am! (no, don’t).

Karolina herself, now in her late twenties, has the skin of someone just starting university (grrrrrr) – the woman clearly takes her own advice and slathers on the creams, drinks the water and lives the dermis dream which is always a great sign in a therapist don’t you think?  I liked her a lot and I did feel that she believed strongly in her products and the service she was offering her clients. There was no trying to encourage me to buy anything and she was trying to explain that her customers sometimes want to have repeat waxes too soon and she has to tell them to wait for the optimum time for removal. Oh my god, waxing is now officially a science…

So what I am saying here? Well it’s definitely worth putting The Beauty Studio on your list if you’re struggling to find a decent waxer (they’re like gold dust according to my Brazilian-crazed friend), and it’s good to know that if you’re shopping, eating or hanging out in that lovely run of Walton St shops in Jericho that you’re also a few minutes away from topping it all off with a great facial, Swedish massage or mani/pedi. Karolina’s prices are reasonable, particularly as she’s so central in Oxford  – £50 for a full body massage, £40 for waxes and Environ treatments from £45 and she’s very discreet and professional.

As ever, let me know if you try it out Karolina and her treatments, and full marks to you if you make it all the way to Hollywood
