Snip snip: The Hair Box, Marlow
Apart from the fact that I can’t help but laugh a little bit to myself about the name Hair Box – I know, I know, I’m puerile – I’m full of admiration for this little pocket rocket of a VIP hair salon in Marlow.
First off, there’s nothing else like it around here. A little space of follicular perfection, set in a not particularly glam box room above Sahara on Marlow High Street, and suggesting nothing of brilliance from its modest pavement signage.
But I have had a brilliant colour and cut there from owner Carol, a woman funkier than I can ever hope to be, and also massively experienced, having trained under the Toni from Toni and Guy – I mean, respect – and she’s worked as a trainer to the best stylists in London herself. Even I, jaded old journo hack that I am, am legitimately be impressed with that.
Carol had obviously thought about my hair prior to my arrival, no doubt the words wispy, lank, lacking body forefront of mind. She showed me some photos of what she thought could work for me – I liked that she’d bothered to research and more importantly I liked her ideas – and so I let her get to work.
Unquestionably it’s a very different experience having one person do your cut and colour in a small room, more intimate, and you’d think it could be a bit uncomfortable, but I didn’t find it that way at all. Firstly, Carol is very easy to get along with – she’s very laid back, massively passionate and knowledgeable about hair and also understands that you may not want to chat all the way through the process, or even at all.
Secondly, when it’s just you and a hair stylist for 2 hours or so, you really are getting the massive benefit of their attention. No-one is having ‘you’re next client is here’ whispered in their ear, or fobbing you off on the trainee to burn your scalp under the shower head. It’s a VIP style treatment at a price that frankly undercuts the bigger salons because of the small overheads, so everyone’s a winner.
Finally, I like this cut a lot. Carol did something different with the Muddy barnet, keeping it longer at the front, giving more vol to the back, giving me a lovely warm colour because I am horrifically GREY at the temples (*sob*) and also showing me a cute way to update the bob with warming tongs that, true to form, I haven’t yet invested in. Because I’m busy. And, um, a bit lazy.
Anyway, if you happen to be in the Marlow vicinity, I don’t have even a hair’s breadth hesitation to recommend Hair Box. Different, quirky and quality. It couldn’t be more Muddy if it tried.
