The Bagnall Centre
Wellness is firmly on the health agenda these days, and happily one of the best clinics happens to be in Chesham
It’s interesting how ‘wellness’ has become an accepted concept over the last year, isn’t it? It feels like our health is finally viewed as more than a pill popped or ten minutes offloading at the harrassed doctor’s surgery, with complementary therapies increasingly part of our lives, whether it’s acupuncture to help fertility or reflexology to help with migraines.
There are quite a few large complementary health centres around these parts, but I think former Muddy Award winners The Bagnall Centre for Integrated Healthcare in Chesham really puts its money where its mouth is. Aside from an extensive studio-based schedule of pilates, yoga, barre, TRX suspension training and, um, hula hooping (well, why not, we enjoyed it at school), owner Joanna Hill has also invested massively in developing a cookery offering to educate kids and parents, with a lovely purpose built room at the top of this beautiful old brick building for cookery courses, talks and demonstrations. The idea is to do more work in tandem with the NHS to educate on how to eat for health – massively needed with our soaring obesity levels and associated health problems.
There’s also the bread and butter of the business, a whole raft of practioners in eight treatment rooms offering the whole gamut from the traditional osteopathy, reflexology, Alexander technique and lymphatic drainage, through to the more wacky, like Emotional Freedom Therapy and Metatronic Healing. If you read Muddy regularly you’ll know that I’ve tried my fair share of unusual treatments in the name of the blogaroo – facial acupuncture still sticks in the mind! – but on the day I visited the Bagnall Centre I kept it clean with an hour of reflexology. Not mad enough for you? Meh, sue me!
The lovely therapist who was doing my treatment, that delightful meridienising of my tootsies, was Emily Laver. Here she is, patiently allowing me to accost her with my iphone.
I’d love to tell you more but I did fall asleep for half the treatment, until the final zingy bit where she zapped my chin and it felt like I’d suddenly been filled with 100 volts of energy.
Tis true that I’m a massive reflexology fan – I used to have treatments weekly when I was pregnant and after my births too. But whatever your complementary preference, the odds are strong that you’ll find it here and performed really well. It’s called The Bagnall Centre for Integrated Healthcare for a reason – fitness and exercise, therapies and wellbeing, nutrition and lifestyle all combining together. Nothing ‘alternative’ about that, in my opinion, it makes total sense.
