<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-you-ve-bought-the-wrong-mattress">YOU&#8217;VE BOUGHT THE WRONG MATTRESS</h2>

<p>There are three reasons why your mattress at home isn&#8217;t cutting the mustard &#8211; it&#8217;s too thin, too soft or firm, or has the wrong kind of fibres. Using natural breathable fibres like wool helps to regulate your body temperature as you sleep, meanwhile cheaper mattresses tend to use synthetic and lighter fillings, and can make you hot and clammy. Synthetic mattresses can also produce off-gassing (the nasty smell when unwrap it for the first time) plus they&#8217;re likely to wear more quickly.</p>



<p>On the firmness front, it&#8217;s not the case that firmer is better, especially when it comes to bad backs. To find out if your current mattress is too hard or too soft, as a starting point, lie on it and slide your hand under the small of your back. If your hand fits easily between your back and the mattress, it may be too firm. If your hand cannot fit under your back at all, it may be too soft.</p>



<p>So, how to nail it when you&#8217;re in store? Get stuck in! Take off your shoes and get into your sleeping position and stay there for at least 10 minutes (don&#8217;t worry &#8211; they&#8217;re used to it in the Hypnos showroom). You should get a decent feel in that time and it could be you need a different tension on one side for your partner so you&#8217;ll both need to go and try it out &#8211; consider it a date night, of sorts. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s not just the right mattress that will secure you an undisturbed night&#8217;s sleep but also that peace you get from buying something ethically and sustainably sourced. <p>Your bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in any bedroom, so getting it right is pretty damned important. First up, size matters (but we all know that). A double bed allows two people just 67cm of space each during the night, which is less space than you have in a single bed, so depending on your sleep habits it’s worth considering a King or a Super King to give you some extra room.&nbsp;Weird shaped room or awkward features? If you need a special size or shape of bed outside the UK standard, talk to Hypnos – every bed is made to order so&nbsp;all&nbsp;your interior flourishes and whims can be accommodated.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-enough-pillow-talk">NOT ENOUGH PILLOW TALK</h2>

<p>The right pillows are as important as the right mattress, and given you spend around&nbsp;2,400 hours a year with your head on a pillow, it&#8217;s something you should invest some time and money in. Having the wrong pillow for your natural sleep position can lead to headaches, neck problems, shoulder problems, and arm numbness.</p>



<p>Want to know if yours needs changing? Fold your pillow in half and then let go. If the pillow springs back then it is still okay to use. If it doesn&#8217;t, it&#8217;s dead and needs replacing. Pillows need cleaning every month and generally changing every 18 months to 2 years for hygiene and support reasons &#8211; yup, no room for sentimentality here.</p>



<p>If it&#8217;s time to buy a fresh one, you can go for a feather, microfibre or memory foam pillow. Microfibre is easy to clean at home but has a shorter lifespan than feather options, which need fluffing and are more costly to clean. Memory foam works for some but can be too firm or too hot in the summer. Hypnos has a pillow range that includes an adjustable Wool Pillow so you can remove clusters of wool if you like a flatter pillow or buy extra extra wool if you&#8217;re a side sleeper and want a firmer feel. On that note &#8211; front sleepers should buy a thin pillow, with back sleepers fairly slim, and side sleepers a little firmer whilst also considering putting a pillow between their knees or getting a body pillow to hug to support the back.</p>

<p>You can opt for a bedstead or frame made from metal or wood with the mattress sitting on slats or a bedboard, or go for a divan, an upholstered piece of furniture that has storage or sprung support under the mattress. Hypnos beds are all divans and can be sprung or platform top under the mattress (or half/half) depending on how firm you like it. There&#8217;s an option for a deep base which can include hidden storage (shoe compartment of dreams!) or a shallow base so the bed still has legs and you can see underneath it.  </p>
