Perched on Fosketh Hill in Westward Ho! near Bideford, Culloden House has a rich history dating back to the Victorian era and has period features galore – think sash windows, high ceilings and a vast reception room, but with modern art, gorgeous velvet sofas, and a kitchen to die for.
This coastal cracker has had a head-to-toe renovation, preserving its vintage exterior and sprinkling in stylish modern interiors. Now offering luxury self-catering stays for up to 16 guests (pooches welcome), we’re thinking a big birthday bash will go swimmingly here (cold water swimming that is – sorry, couldn’t resist).
Overlooking the Blue Flag winning Westward Ho! Beach (which is dog-friendly, FYI) there’s surfing on offer if the swimming doesn’t appeal, or if you prefer to stay on dry land, how about hiking the coastal path or fishing? But before you sink your feet into the sand, plunge into eight super-plush bedrooms with tasteful coastal décor (no jaunty stripes here), large double beds, and en-suites – plus freestanding roll-top baths in a few of the bedrooms (race you to it!) which look out onto the epic Devon landscape. Better yet, step out to the terrace for a dip in the hot tub and front-row sea sighting.
Speaking of vistas; the dining room is an elegant hosting space with reams of natural light and sweeping views of the beach from its mahoosive windows. You and your guests can have a glam sit-down dinner party, then spill into the lounge, with its cosy Chesterfield-style seating. No need to faff about organising party games as you’ll have an easy-to-connect smart TV, plus a stock of family board games and puzzles. If the weather’s playing ball, you can feast al-fresco in the outside kitchen with a handy pizza oven – or ditch the pots and pans altogether and let Culloden arrange a private chef to come and cater for you (now you’re speaking my language).
Travelling with a tight-knit few, or perhaps need some overflow space? Check out the beautiful Beach Apartment, which takes up to six guests and equally oozes coastal luxe, plus it’s also dog friendly.
Being within walking distance of a beach isn’t all this neck of the woods has to offer; take a gander at the Royal North Devon Golf Club (5-minute drive), which is famously the oldest golf course in the UK. Kids will love the local Pebble Ridge Go Kart and mini-golf course plus the numerous fish and chip and scone choices – well, this is the West Country.
