The Hundred of Ashendon

Muddy says: A charming, rural, unpretentious pub in mid-Bucks from an ex St John chef. It’s retained its Bib Gourmand for a third year (2016, 17, 18).

It takes a certain bravery to give a top chef’s job at St John in London and open an unknown rural pub in Ashendon, Bucks. Matt Gill is the man, and in four years he’s snaffled three consecutive Bib Gourmands for his business (2016, 2017, 2018), and created a space that caters both for locals and gourmands. He’s also managed to teach me what kohlrabi is (well do you know?!) after I ordered it on the menu twice in a row.

The vibe here is unpretentious and welcoming, though the food is definitely on the fine dining side – I’d use it more for a group of friends than to feed the kids on a Saturday night.

There are rooms here if you need to stay over too – the breakfasts are the stuff of legend.
