Table 13, Oxford

This relaxed, fine dining supper club is changing the game when it comes to plant-based food with inventive dishes and stunning presentation

Weekend Escapes

Is it a plate of food, is it a work of art? Hard to know when it comes to the sensational dishes coming out of the Table 13 kitchen since its rapid ascendency to became one of Oxfordshire’s most sought-after supper clubs since its inception last year.

The food is entirely plant based but this isn’t about preaching veganism, it’s about creating imaginative and inspiring food in as sustainable a way as possible – and hey, if owner chef Georgia Gallacher can make veggies this sexy, who needs animal sourced additions?

Georgia’s passion has come from stints at Joe’s in Summertown, The Paternoster Chophouse, London, and the uber-fash Pidgin in Hackney – a tiny restaurant that changes its menu every week and has not repeated a dish in six years. Wow!

At Table 13, it’s fine dining, casual style, with punters dining at one large table for ten guests. So that’s a no to walk-ins – you need to book ahead but don’t need to take all ten seats. The evening starts with a beautifully crafted aperitif at 7pm then dinner begins shortly afterwards in an experience that lasts between 3-4 hours during which time you’ll be served world-class innovative food that’s even got the national food critics hot under the collar.

Recent dishes have included wild garlic, chestnuts, Guinness and whiskey, but how it’s all combined is a mystery until it’s placed in front of you. Or how about turnip, fennel, samphire and tarragon; and to finish, beetroot, dark chocolate, yoghurt and fermented blackberry?

Forget nose-to-tail eating, this is ‘seed-to-stalk’, with the aim of reducing waste and cutting out food miles. Local suppliers include Pickle & Lime, OX3 Greens, the Oxford Wine Company, L’Altre Vi and The Oxford Artisan Distillery.

Dishes are paired with beer, wine or sake, and for the non-drinkers the homemade non-alcoholic drinks change seasonally, incorporating shrubs and herbs in various cordials and tonics. However, if you’re looking to avoid the drive home and make the most of the paired drinks, Table 13 has a boutique double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom that can be booked alongside the meal reservation.

It’s £79 per person for a whopping eight courses with drinks plus aperitif, which is incredible value for food of this calibre. Open Thurs-Sat evenings – and you’d better bag a table while you still can.
