Muddy meets… Toyah Willcox

Did you make it to the Rewind Festival last weekend? Muddy Stilettos was hanging out with the stars (excuse me while I douse myself in a Guiness World Record sized pinch of salt). OK so I aerial rugby-tackled on any Eighties icons close enough to assault.

And look who I nabbed! Only the brilliant Toyah Willcox, with barely a bruise on her. Anyone who was old enough to take ‘O’ levels instead of GSCEs, chainsmoke multi-coloured ciggies with gold tips or borrow their brother’s Chopper bike will remember Toyah – the dyed-to-a-cinder hair, the multi-coloured make up, and the impossibly catchy It’s a Mystery.

These days she lives in Pershore (just south of Worcester, geography meisters). Aside from trilling and actiing for her living, the Eighties pocket rocket also loves to read, make her own jewellery (she made that masterpiece around her neck, above) and just adores talking to Muddy Stilettos…

Shoulder pads or leg warmers?

Shoulder pads, definitely. I’m relatively short so I find you can trick people into thinking you’re taller if you have the right kind of shoulder pads.

Bucks or Oxon?

I love Oxford city so I guess I’ll say Oxfordshire. I love reading so I always go there and buy lots of books. I used to love going to  The Randolph Hotel for high tea so whenever I tour near in Oxford I like to stay there.

Live or Studio?

Argh, I can’t decide. I absolutely love writing and recording in the studio, but then I get to go out to make it all work in front of an audience, so I refuse to choose!

Brogues or Stilettos?

Stilettos. I’m too short for big wedgy flat shoes.

Eighties music or up to date?

I’m gonna have to say Eighties music but I do love the new stuff that’s coming through, I’m not stuck in the Eighties myself, if you know what I mean.

Favourite Eighties act?

I love Trevor Horn –  he was so iconic in everything he did and we all wanted to work with him.

Youth or experience?

Experience. Oh god. One hundred percent.

Straight hair or perm?

Straight. You’ll never see me with a perm

Best blog on the planet?

Are you kidding me? Muddy Stilettos of course.
