My Favourite Places: Joelle Dinnage

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Fave Places features here.

joelle dinnage
Dutch-born, Oxford-based entrepreneur and art dealer Joëlle Dinnage is the founder of the Oxford Art Fair and owner of the Funky Art Gallery.  The second Oxford Art Fair takes place this weekend (27-28 July) at The Fishes pub in North Hinksey. Here are her favourite places.

Alpha Bar at the Covered Market, Oxford

alpha bar
I can’t leave the city centre without a take-away chicken caesar salad from the Alpha Bar in the Covered Market. The food is delicious, and all healthy and organic. It’s worth queuing up for! I am quite health-conscious, cycling everywhere I go, but if I fancy a big blow out I treat myself to a burger from Jamie’s Italian – they’re the best.

Walking along the river at Port Meadow

joelle - port meadow
No matter what time of the year, walking along the River Thames at Port Meadow is my favourite way to relax and unwind. It’s amazing that a city like Oxford has the beauty of the country side so close to its city centre. My dog, Elvis, usually jumps into the river for a dip. I’m sure that it’s one of his favourite places too.

De Hems, London

de hems
This is a very special place to me, not only because its the only Dutch Cafe Bar in London but also because its where I met my husband. They organise great Dutch parties (ah… the memories…), and they serve Dutch food, which I of course love!!! www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk/dehemsdutchcafebarsoholondon

The Pitt Rivers Museum

When I take my Dutch friends and family on Oxford sightseeing tours we always stop by the Pitt Rivers Museum. My nephews and nieces love the huge T-Rex Dinosaur and of course the shrunken heads. It’s great if you’re interested in archaeology and Oxford history – we discovered a while back that a couple of dinosaurs digged up from pretty much our back garden, which is pretty cool!   www.prm.ox.ac.uk

Gilgamesh, Camden

gilgamesh
I love Camden full stop and have to visit Gilgamesh when I am in London. I used to live in nearby in Islington and this is a great place for Asian food and a super cool ambience. The atmosphere takes you by complete surprise when entering from the busy streets of Camden Town into the beautifully styled Restaurant. www.gilgameshbar.com

Cocktails at the OXO Tower overlooking London

oxo tower
Great cocktails with an awesome view of London on the 8th floor of this iconic South Bank building. When my friends come over to visit me, I always recommend they come here, especially if they have something special to celebrate.

The Fishes Pub, Oxford

This pub was a finalist in the Muddy Awards this year and I can understand why. I really love it here – there’s a fantastic huge one acre garden and tasty food. The staff always make you feel really welcome and the atmosphere is fab. I’m holding my second Oxford Art Fair here on the weekend – watch it transform into the city’s largest outdoor contemporary art gallery! I’m really looking forward to it.
