INTERIORS ALERT: The Old Flight House, Nr Bicester

There are some places that are so ‘Muddy’ I could literally live in them. I featured The Old Flight House in Weston-on-the-Green (about 10 minutes drive south of Bicester) when it first opened a few years back, and it’s since become a massively successful vintage, antique and interiors store.

Set in a rural location, it’s a destination store – you’re never going to just be passing it! – and I think that’s why quite a few people I talk to haven’t made it in yet. But seriously – seriously – if you love vintage, curios and beautiful interiors but don’t like the stuffiness and pokiness of traditional antiques stores, you have to see this place.

OFM collage intLook, it’s impossible not to take beautiful photos – it’s exquisitely styled in every nook and cranny.

And it’s big – not only the physical size of the store, but the feeling of spaciousness inside, with a massive atrium and front desk and a really lovely cafe bang in the middle of the action.

The cafe has had a lot of investment since I first visited and has a enthusiastic young chef at the helm who’s obviously making her mark – the cafe was busy and buzzy. Yeah go on, try saying that when you’re half-cut. I was too early for lunch but did the *cough* honourable thing and had a doorstop of a carrot cake. I’m ashamed to say I scoffed it before I remembered to take a photo (sorrryyyyyy), so you’ll have to take my word for it – it was just what you’d want in a cake. Moist and massive.

Back to the store, and there are scores of eclectic dealers selling everything from copper pans (very trendy at the mo)

… and retro furnishings

There’s also a small vintage garden section that flows out onto the pretty outdoor seating area

I mean, it’s pretty much impossible to fault, and you can easily spend two hours wandering around here.

Given that The Old Flight House is in a little village, unless you’re massively local it will be a trip out for you, so aside from a pilgrimage to Bicester Village you might want to tie in a visit to Rousham Gardens (only for kids over 15 without prior arrangement), Blenheim Palace (about 6 miles away in Woodstock) or even with a late afternoon visit to the brilliant Jane’s Teas in Kirtlington after you’ve shopped and lunched – check your timings with that one though, she’s only open every first and third weekend through summer from noon to 5.30pm.

So it’s a big Muddy thumbs up for a visit here – they didn’t win this year’s Muddy Award for Best Emporium for nothing – ans as ever, let me know if you make it and how much treasure you end up taking home with you.
