Modern Art Oxford (without the art)
Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Cafe features here.
My friend Karen is always laughing at me for featuring so many coffee shops on Muddy Stilettos. Perhaps I am a bit obsessed, but it’s not with the coffee so much as the spaces. An interesting or quirky interior just about does it for me every time, with a bit of people-watching sprinkled on top for good measure.
I love Modern Art Oxford for its free exhibitions, some amazing, some more challenging – I’ll admit it, I was getting the back and front of Hans Josephsohn’s nude bronze sculptures mixed up last week! This one, below, was one of the few that I could work out. The exhibition is now closed so I’m afraid you won’t get the chance to see how truly stupid I was being.
Of course you’re either interested in art or you’re not, but everyone loves a good coffee and a mooch around a gift shop. So it’s worth mentioning that Modern Art Oxford is a great place to do both, regardless of the exhibition space.
The gift shop is full of stylish nick-nacks, from mugs and bags to lightshades and cards. I love the way it’s so uncluttered compared to many of the gift shops I visit, where you need to use your bag like a machete to get through the front door. The store is geared at adults, so go there for your other half, friends or parents if they’re grey groovers. You can buy online too here.
… and soon to be moved outside to its trendy home below, a little piece of industrial cool which I LOVE, in The Yard on St Ebbe’s Street when summer hits. Can’t wait.
