Home sweet home

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Interiors features here.

One of the big bonuses of doing my little spot on Ali Jones’s weekend Radio Oxford show in Summertown is that I’m right around the corner from South Parade, which has long been my favourite shopping street in the whole city. *sigh*

It’s basically a macrocosm of everything I love – loads of indie shops, a watering hole and a cool little theatre as well. Whether you have kids (in which case there is Barefoot Books at the end of the road, several cafes to choose from, plus lots of really good kid’s theatre at the Northwall), or you fancy a little trip out with a friend, it’s really worth having a gander there for a couple of hours.

Within a couple of hundred paces you’ll find the fab Sarah Wiseman Gallery, the award-winning Vanilla fashion boutique, a really gorgeous new kitchen/bathroom design store Hastings Drummond (and let me tell you, I am so badly coveting the oval marble bath in the window display I’m hyperventilating), the Oxford Wine Cafe for high-quality sustenance and, best of all, Liscious Interiors, my absolute favourite interiors shop in the area.

I’ve come to know Liscious owner Fran a little bit over the last year, and seriously, I’d trust my whole house to that woman’s taste. She’s a professional interior designer actually, and Liscious Interiors came about because she was always coming across other cool stuff as she was on the look-out for pieces for her clients. Now she runs both businesses together which makes perfect sense.

That being the case, the shop has a really eclectic feel, selling vintage clothes here, or a Deco chair there, a taxidermied pheasant or a a French chandelier. I don’t think there are many shops that have the ability to surprise now, but Liscious definitely has that edge, the sort of place where you’d find the statement piece for your house.

I took these pics a few weeks ago when I was last passing so the interior may  have changed a little but it gives you an idea of how gorgeous it is.

Hi Helen, practical is good lol! Yes, there’s a pay and display car park a 5 minute walk away just off Banbury Road, to the left of Finders Keepers estate agent. That’s by far the least stressful way to do it otherwise you end up driving up and down residential streets for hours.
Glad you enjoy your Muddy, keep reading! x

    Hi Hero,
I met you recently when I stopped by Licious.( a delightful and unusual little shop ) I was the lady having a rant about all shops and stores up and down the country being the same old same old, nothing different any more blah blah blah….. and how lovely it was to find some in Summertown.
Anyhow, since I was introduced to you, I have followed your blogs, fab u lous! It’s great to read your reviews such as the one you did on The Muddy Duck, we went for Sunday lunch last week, what a find , fantastic.
Being an avid shopper ( I work for British Airways so can be found shopping all over Europe on a regular basis ) it is nice to know of great finds closer to home. I have a dear friend ,who I am thrilled to say, has moved from Cheshire to Oxfordshire, together, we have so much exploring to do and will be taking your advice before setting off on one of our epic shopping jaunts. Thanks for doing the footwork for us!

Hi Shirley, yes I remember you! I’m so pleased you took the time to have a look at Muddy and even better that it’s proving useful. What a compliment, thanks so much. Keep reading and have fun with your friend around the county! Hero x

Hi Hero. As a past summertown resident, thought would also point out the hidden parking (sadly now pay and display), by the tennis courts on Middle Way (just around the corner from Vanilla). Really convenient for North Wall although have to confess I only ever park there in the daytime these days.
