Home sweet home
Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Interiors features here.
One of the big bonuses of doing my little spot on Ali Jones’s weekend Radio Oxford show in Summertown is that I’m right around the corner from South Parade, which has long been my favourite shopping street in the whole city. *sigh*
It’s basically a macrocosm of everything I love – loads of indie shops, a watering hole and a cool little theatre as well. Whether you have kids (in which case there is Barefoot Books at the end of the road, several cafes to choose from, plus lots of really good kid’s theatre at the Northwall), or you fancy a little trip out with a friend, it’s really worth having a gander there for a couple of hours.
Within a couple of hundred paces you’ll find the fab Sarah Wiseman Gallery, the award-winning Vanilla fashion boutique, a really gorgeous new kitchen/bathroom design store Hastings Drummond (and let me tell you, I am so badly coveting the oval marble bath in the window display I’m hyperventilating), the Oxford Wine Cafe for high-quality sustenance and, best of all, Liscious Interiors, my absolute favourite interiors shop in the area.
I’ve come to know Liscious owner Fran a little bit over the last year, and seriously, I’d trust my whole house to that woman’s taste. She’s a professional interior designer actually, and Liscious Interiors came about because she was always coming across other cool stuff as she was on the look-out for pieces for her clients. Now she runs both businesses together which makes perfect sense.
That being the case, the shop has a really eclectic feel, selling vintage clothes here, or a Deco chair there, a taxidermied pheasant or a a French chandelier. I don’t think there are many shops that have the ability to surprise now, but Liscious definitely has that edge, the sort of place where you’d find the statement piece for your house.
Go and check it out and let me know what you think (and what you buy!).
