Modern heirlooms: pick up a gem at Mallams’ Auctioneers
'Diamonds are forever' has never rung truer. Pick up some one-of-a-kind sparklers from Mallams' Jewellery Auction, 8 Dec.
With the festive season around the corner (and let’s face it – we could all use a treat this Christmas), we can think of no better time to invest in something a little special and, ideally, sparkly.
We’re big fans at Muddy for Mallam’s home, garden and antiques auctions, and now we’re scanning their newly-released Jewellery and Watches catalogue for their auction on 8 Dec with greedy interest.
Mallams only hold three specialist jewellery and watch auctions a year at its Oxford saleroom, and items range from early Georgian antiques to contemporary pieces. You can expect big names such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels, but you don’t need to spend millions to get your hands on a gorgeous investment piece. Auctions are a fantastic way to get more bang for your buck (think high-end eBay), and with a clever online bidding system in place, you can pick up diamonds in your dressing gown.
Can’t wait for 8 December? Here are the pieces we have our beady eye on…
Art Deco Aquamarine and Diamond Pendant
We’ve been hankering after aquamarine jewellery ever since Meghan Markle wore that whopper ring on her wedding day, and this glorious kite-shaped step-cut aquamarine drop is just the ticket. It’s bordered by old brilliant-cut diamonds, with a total diamond weight of approximately 0.80ct.
Estimate £700 – £900
Diamond Set Serpent Bracelet
This elegant bracelet brings a whole new meaning to ‘diamond head snake’. Of bi-colour design, the snake’s head is pavé set with rose-cut diamonds and circular-cut red stone eyes for a striking effect.
Estimate £700 – £900
Diamond and Gem ‘REGARD’ Locket Pendant
Ever heard of acrostic jewellery? Popular in the Victorian era, it features gemstones where the first letter of each stone spells out a word or sentiment. This sunburst hinged locket circa 1830-40 features a ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, ruby, and a diamond to spell out ‘R.E.G.A.R.D’. Stylish and sentimental – this ticks all the boxes.
Estimate £300 – £500
19th Century Diamond Floral Spray Brooch
Brooches are officially making a comeback, and this diamond beauty is top of our wishlist. Made up of graduated cushion-shaped old-cut and rose-cut diamonds, this gold and silver mounted floral spray has a half carat centre diamond, with a total weight of approximately 1.50ct.
Estimate £500 – £700
Austrian Green Agate Panel Bracelet
We’ll be green with envy of whoever snaps up this gorgeous number. Made in Austrian gold with pierced floral decoration and green agate batons, this bracelet is 18cm long and 3cm wide.
Estimate £300 – £400
Art Deco Sapphire and Diamond Ring
Talk about a diamond knuckle-duster! This stunning panel ring features a rectangular step-cut sapphire bordered by graduated old and brilliant-cut diamonds. The setting measures 3cm in length and has a total diamond weight of approximately 1.40ct.
Estimate £1200 – £1500
Cartier Diamond and Gem Brooch
Always killing the pot plants? Get yourself a diamond version instead – a lot hardier! This Cartier brooch features cabochon ruby and green agate flowers and foliage, accented with individual round brilliant-cut diamonds above a round brilliant, Swiss and single-cut diamond set trunk and vase. Total diamond weight approximately 0.55ct.
Estimate £2000 – £3000
Jewellery auctions are the perfect place to pick up an engagement ring without the high street markup, and this diamond ring is a spot-on example. The centre round brilliant-cut diamond is approximately 0.90ct, set in stepped shoulders of baguette-cut diamonds. Ring size S.
