Canada Goose, anyone?

Canada Goose. Not a culinary option for Crimbo (though now you mention it….here goosy goosy), but a skiwear brand currently being devoured by anyone heading off to the ski slopes. Canada Goose started life as a small Toronto label in the Fifties and has slowly become supertrendy, luxe outerwear, partly because it’s well cut and well made, but also because those Canadians don’t half know how to stay warm in a snow storm.

This wasn’t prior knowledge to me but Mr Muddy, an ardent skier and cool-brander-above-all costs type, has yapped on for weeks about getting a CG jacket. So I had my lightbulb Christmas shopping moment and duly went online. Saw them stocked in Harrod’s, rolled my eyes, searched on google again, and then, bizarrely, up popped the Turners in Marlow.

Who knew?! Apparently the outerwear specialist Turners is by far the biggest stockist of CG in the region. The shop’s been going for 22 years, so will be familiar to Marlow locals, but in March they parallel turned off the high street (the rents becoming too greedy – a familiar tale these das) and stopped with a flourish around the corner in Station Road.

The impulse when shopping for things like sports equipment or holiday shopping (mine included it must be said) is increasingly to go into John Lewis, or a big sports superstore, thinking that everything is in one place for an easy pick up. But that’s rubbish really. Just like shopping for food or wine, it’s a no brainer really that quality often comes with passion and knowledge and curation, so I gave myself a little slap on the wrist when I went into Turners, because although it’s fairly small in size,  it’s a really great shop.

It stocks for adults mostly (there’s a tiny crossover of accessories for kids), and specialises in cool, luxe, high quality ski and outwear labels not readily available elsewhere. Canada Goose for starters, but also Spyder, Ilse Jacobsen, Didriksons, Henri Duvillard and Napapijri, plus Hunter, Ugg and Super Dry. (In the summer it throws off the fleeces and flirts around in Sea Folly bikinis, but that’s another story).

Prices are reasonable – men’s fully lined waterproof coats start around £240 which is brilliant value for an item you’ll probably have in your wardrobe for 10 years , and even the Canada Goose range, at the upper end of the scale, knocks 10% off Harrod’s prices. Accessories are well-chosen and adds to the sense of quality that pervades. The thermals are way cooler than those white ribbed monsters you pick up in M&S that turn grey by the end of the holiday – here you go, have a gratuitous photo to demonstrate. Really, the things I do for you.

And  I  loved the range of Ugg boots – especially those black furry trainers, below left – plus the supersoft bobble hats and chunky knit scarves that I’d wear in the Chiltern Hills as easily as a Chamonix black run. (That’s a total lie by the way – I’ve only ever gone down a black run once and it was *blush* entirely on the Muddy buttocks).

I’m not going skiing this season, or I’d snaffle one of these Spyder coats for sure – very flattering cut and I really loved the ‘waxy’ detail on the chest and shoulders.

Mr Muddy, on the other hand, has his weekend pass for lad’s skiing in February, and now that Turners has facilitated a manly new jacket and accessories, Mr M may let your trusty correspondent off-the-leash for a girly weekend this summer. Thanks for sorting that out Turners, and er, hold that Seafolly bikini for me, won’t you?
