Supercool kidswear shop alert!!

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Kids Shopping features here.

Oh glory be! Soooo excited about the launch of The Dandy Kid, a supercool new children’s clothes, toys and accessories shop in Wendover.

I popped along to the opening last month, propelled by my daughter whose nose for fashion makes Anna Wintour look like a style inteloper.

I’m not one of these people who buys into dressing children like fashion models, making them ‘on trend’ and spending insane amounts of money. But I don’t mind spending a little more than high street prices on a best dress, or a coat that will last a few years, or something that’s a bit different and cool.

The Dandy Kid stocks the kind of labels I like – a bit quirky, not found here there and everywhere. I’m particularly taken with FUB, Tootsa MacGinty (which I’ve featured before on Muddy) and Boys and Girls – cool stuff that works for both sexes. Becks who co-owns The Dandy Kid, has two sproglings of her own and a very healthy desire to have nicely dressed kids who have fun and don’t spend hours discussing couture with their friends. Which sounds about right!

The launch was great fun – they’d hired a carousel in the courtyard and free face painting for the kids, so my daughter had the butterfly glitter treatment while I ogled the accessories and clothes rails.

The shop is small and charming (a website is coming soon where you can spread yourself expansively on your sofa to buy), big enough to show off the kids clothes and small enough to share space with lovely fabric company Fabric HQ, and downstairs in the same building the rather wonderful A Little Bird Told Me gallery, which stocks original Quentin Blake prints amongst other special gifts.

Next door is a cafe and another tiny boutique that packs a punch, LiveLuxe, all in this same little courtyard off the Wendover High Street. It’s kind of like a mini emporium, and I think that’s the future for little businesses reallly – clubbing together, creating an experience for the visitor beyond their own shop.

I must say that I’m finding Wendover more and more fun to visit – a new wine bar here, cool kids clothes or interiors there, lots of independent shops and fashion boutiques in a pretty market town. Definitely worth checking out if you fancy a change, and if you have kids with you, the sublime Wendover Woods are close by too – but maybe buy a pair of these from The Dandy Kid first?!
