Artists & Makers Fair, 5th-6th May, The Glass House, Waddesdon Plant Centre at Waddesdon Manor
I’m just sneaking this one in first, because it’s happening this weekend. If you haven’t visited it before, Waddesdon Manor is one of the most beautiful National Trust treasures in the UK, with some of the best children’s facilities, so when there’s ‘added’ pleasure like this brilliant Artists & Makers Fair it’s a no-brainer to head up there for the day. Local potters, glass-makers, silversmiths, printmakers will all be exhibiting, plus there are live demonstrations if you’re that way inclined.
10.30-4.30pm, The Glass House,Waddesdon Plant Centre, Waddesdon Manor
Fantastic Ferrari Display, Sunday 13th May, Cliveden
Ah, the smell of burning rubber. Do you care? Well, let’s find out. Cliveden is hosting a Ferrari and supercar day at in its beautiful grounds on May 13th. Boy racers and their dads will drool at the cars, you’ll idly ponder why your lifeplan never quite worked out the way you planned (a people carrier just isn’t the same is it?), small children can bomb around the grounds oblivious to the ostentation around them, and if you don’t have children yourselves, you can enjoy the sensation of possibility – two of you, two seats in the Ferrari, two credit cards, off you go to Capri!
10.30-2.30pm Cliveden, Taplow, Maidenhead, SL6 0JA. Tel: 01628 605069 (Estate Office)
National Mills weekend, 12-13th May, nationwide
Just in case you missed this post, it’s worth mentioning again as I think it’s a really lovely, different thing to try. It’s National Mill Weekend from May 12-13th, where the nation’s mills, some privately owned, and many still in working order, are open to the public. Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire have their fair share of wind and watermills, but there’s also a comprehensive county-by-county list here.
World Burlesque Games, 5-13th May, various venues, Soho.
Whey hey! It’s nipple tassles and ostrich fans galore as the world’s top burlesque artistes battle it out for the coveted World Crown. Before you object on grounds of sexism and exploitation, may I point out that there is also a whole night dedicated to male burlesque. There’s also a weirdy night where it’s all a bit experimental for my tastes but, since we are right on and liberal at MS so we will not judge! I’m off to the Rest of the World finals next Friday. Should be a total riot. I shall report back anon.
The Dictator, on general release from 18th May
We all know that Sasha Baron-Cohen is as mad as a snake and enjoys thrusting himself in situations that are likely to attract assassination attempts. From the preview it looks like he’s outdone himself this time. Squirmingly, unmissably hilarious.
