Superflashy newsflash!

The good times keep on comin in Bucks & Oxon - lucky us!

Shall we cheer up this soggy week with some delicious social titbits?

Cliveden Lit fest, 14-15 October

Book up, book up! First the spa was fancy pantsed; now Cliveden is holding its own literary festival. Unsurprisingly given the history of the stately home, the festival’s themes are high politics and low scandal; the influence of brilliant women and the role of history in the movies; the Munich crisis to the Russian revolutions and the rise of Zionism. The authors include Howard Jacobson, Sebastian Faulks, Amanda Foreman, Daisy Goodwin and Ruth Rogers.

LASSCO jazz nights

A smart idea to offer live music at this quirkily gorgeous architectural salvage centre in Milton Common. The Thursday live jazz nights have quietly been gaining steam and now they’re official, along with the ‘Mellow Fellows’ on Fridays. Put on your turtle neck and nod into the middle-distance.

Summer Festival, The Angel at Burford, 18 – 20 Aug

You don’t catch many pubs throwing their own three day fest so hats off to The Angel in the picture perfect Cotswold town of Burford for providing live music, a gin bar, real ale festival, shire horses, south African Braai, and a magician. Jury’s out on whether they’ll pull a rabbit out the hat too but I wouldn’t bet against it.

Dalleth pop-up supper club, Marlow, Sat 26 Aug

The duo London-based chefs heads towards Marlow for late August and early Sept for a series of gastro pop-ups. Influenced by the ‘lost cultures of Britain’s past’ Dalleth claim to utilise ingredients often overlooked by modern cooks (hopefully not tripe), and are serving a set tasting menu for £68.

Feast on the Farm, 14 & 15 Oct

Those innovative Peterley Manor Farm bods already have an established yurt cafe and various special dining nights. Now they’ve created Feast on the Farm, their first two day food and drinks festival, celebrating Chilterns food and drink. There’s a Lea & Sandeman wine bar, workshops from butchery to fermentation and some Heston-style molecular gastronomy for children, plus local chefs, Matt Lyons from The Jolly Cricketers, Mikey Seferynski from The Three Oaks and Ben Jenkins of Amersham’s renowned The Artichoke.

Tractor Ted, Stonor Park, 3 Sep

A giant Tractor Ted bouncy castle? Out my way, young children, I’m all over it. TV’s favourite farm engine arrives at Stonor Park in early September, testing my legendary digger ‘scooping skills’ and welly wanging, and thrilling the Under 7s if they can get anywhere near the equipment.

New Westgate shopping centre, 24 Oct

We have a date, people! The official launch day is Sat 24 Oct but there’s a 10 day festival to celebrate Oxford’s most exciting shopping launch for a decade, with over 125 new stores, restaurants and cinema. Credit card, I hope you’re feeling flexible.

The Royal Oak, Marlow Teepee

It’s teepee-tastic these days isn’t it, and The Royal Oak, Marlow pub has just joined the canvas club with new Teepee for event hire. Set in the enclosed area of the garden, it’s kitted out with a fire pit and you’re served by buff young men wearing feather head dresses (oh alright, I’m lying about that bit).
