FOUND: a London-style park for simple pleasures

Hmmm, you’ve reached an older feature - let’s get you up to date! Read our latest Days out features here.

Sometimes it’s the simple pleasures that work best. I’m constantly looking around for unusual, quirky or unique experiences and events to tell you about but today I just went to the lovely Cutteslowe and Sunnymead Park in North Oxford with my family and some friends and had a lovely, relaxed time.

At 42 hectares, it’s the largest park in Oxford with a large kids playground full of zip wires, massive sand pit, and a tube slide that is not made for adults (I blasted out of the other side and overshot the ‘runway’ – not cool). The cafe kiosk is basic, fine for snacks and icecreams and polystyrene tea, and the toilets are open – that’s the best that can be said for them really, soap obviously being a council cutback in these days of financial turmoil and vandalism being a free extra. It felt kind of London-y in the sense of there being loads of children mingling together, lots of families on a day out, quite buzzy.

Precocious child… not mine!

My kids loved the simple crazy golf course at £5ish for an adult and two kids, and were sad to miss the  miniature train that wasn’t running today but generally runs on Wednesdays and Sundays (download the timetable here) for the princely sum of £1. Other pleasures at Cuttesloe include a skate park, duck pond, paddling pool (being painted today so probably good to go next week) and loads of green space to kick a ball about in.

Definitely pack a picnic and a football/cricket set/bucket and spade for a no-stress day just hanging out with your kids. Or if you’ve had enough of making castles and watching your children whack each other over the head with the putter, you’re a 5 minute drive into Summertown and its delights (search the blog for tips), or 15 minutes into Oxford City Centre.

Funny funny – I actually lol’d (is that a word?), at your tube experience and the pic of the child. I really must venture into Oxfordshire one day….
