Run for it

Calling all runners! These are the best all-terrain trainers that Muddy has ever tried. If you're schlepping through mud and ice this month, they're an absolute life-saver.

If you’re a runner, January is the grimmest month – cold, dark, windy, rainy and – ugh – icy. And that’s if you can get out there in daylight at all –  not easy to achieve on working days. But I have found something to lift my spirits this month as I whizz, OK, plod along pavements, through the dinginess. I’ve been testing out these brand new Adidas Ultraboost trainers for a few weeks and they are hands down (should that be feet down?)  the best running shoes I’ve ever had.

These burgundy beauties are specifically designed for winter running, with the devil very much being in the detail.  I love the maroon knitted upper, which happens to be a very voguish shade but crucially doesn’t show mud splatters. Thumbs up too for being splash-proof (no limping home with sodden socks) and high cut on the foot (minimizing that flash of flesh between running tights and the top of the trainer, thus no cold ankles). But the best bit is the grid-like sole to increase grip in tricky terrains. I am basically the Frank Spencer of running, so notoriously accident-prone I’ve ruined two consecutive family summer holidays after being hospitalized (twice! In two different countries!) from running falls. But even I can’t fall over in these trainers – I’ve worn them in ice and snow, on muddy fields and crumbling paths and they’ve kept me upright. They’re idiot-proof, basically.

(Side note: they also make you very popular at the gym – all the PTs at mine clocked them pronto and honed in to admire.)

Such amazingness comes at a price – an eye-watering £169.95 to be precise. I usually spend about £60 on running shoes so these are a serious investment. But, that said, I know a lot of you will be training at the moment for a marathon or similar – ’tis the season of new starts and challenges after all  – so if 2018 is the year you’re taking your running up a notch, then these are well worth a gander.

Too pricey? Here are three brilliant bargains to rev up your runs…

Nike Free RN Flyknit

I jog in these in warmer months and love ’em. They’re currently on sale at £76 reduced from £109.

New Balance 860v7

I thought New Balance just did ‘fashion’ trainers. I was wrong. These offer excellent support for runners who tend to over-pronate and they’re in the sale too – £77 down from £110.

Puma Speed 600 Ignite 2

These have a propulsion zone in the sole that helps propel you forward, the magenta/blue colourway looks damn cool and  they’re currently a bargainous £4o.50 down from £90.
