Back to Work

What does your workspace say about you?

Fancy a nose around my desk? Welcome to the nerve centre of Muddy HQ under lockdown (full disclosure, I chucked away my half-full cup of tea before taking this photo).

Working from home is the new normal for most of us, but holy crap it can be a challenge! It’s harder to take dedicated lunch breaks, the kids are constantly popping up in the back of Zoom calls – hand on heart, my 17 year old walked past twice in his undies yesterday – and it’s all too tempting to WFS (work from the sofa) which is productivity enemy number one.

Despite the challenges, I do find that I’m quietly enjoying my return to the working cubby hole where I first started Muddy Stilettos, below. The desk is in the corner of the living room so sometimes the kids watch TV while I zone out and write. When listening to Pokémon followed by re-runs of Gilmore Girls for two hours flat drives me to distraction, I shuffle through to the kitchen for a change of scene and a hit of direct sunlight. Or if I want total peace, I’ll slope off to the bedroom, where I can write looking out over the garden.

I’m ready to work. But first… a cup of tea

Friends of mine tell me they’re ‘taking over’ their kitchen tables for work, commandeering spare rooms, or even putting up picnic tables up to get some much-needed space. And this got me thinking – I’d love to see how other people’s desks! The trinkets, the stories, the space they carve out for themselves.

So, all pride aside (it’s a modest little corner of the house) I’ve taken these snaps of my own desk for you to make your own judgement!

I’m a sucker for a witty slogan and this one made me laugh out loud. I can’t actually remember where I found it now but it tickles me to work underneath a piece of art that proclaims ‘Zero Commercial Potential’. The rose gold fairy lights have been pinched from my daughter while I’m working from home (sorry Iris).

This ‘vase’ was once filled with sweets as part of a party bag. I like its chunky lack of pretension. Plus the size is perfect for the small flowers (and, let’s be honest, some pretty weeds) that I’m currently picking from the garden. My amateur rustic displays are giving me a lot of pleasure right now. Just wait till my cutting garden gets going – not sure the hollyhocks will fit…

Two of my favourite brands get me through the working day. I’m a massive Ila Spa fan (local too, based near Woodstock) and this ‘Life in the Fast Lane’ mist is an instant de-stresser. Rituals do some of the most deliciously aromatic candles on the market. We always have candles going in the office, and I keep the tradition at home too.

I can’t deny it, I’m obsessed with my phone case! I bought a new iphone 11 (*boom* – just dropping that in) a few months back and became quite paranoid about keeping it safe. Now it’s cocooned safely in its Muddy branding and I’m more in love with it and its snazzy dual lens camera than ever.

Guilty m’lord. I admit it, I usually have about four notebooks on the go at once, all half used and scrawled all over in my indecipherable handwriting . This is my effort to control my stationery fetish- a pretend Moleskin from WHSmith (seriously such good value, I love them) with a Muddy sticker to make sure I pick up the right book.

I work in a small space and this mid-century influenced white, minimalist desk and chair are sleek, elegant and from … Ikea! The rollers on the chair are a bit rubbish truth be told, but the hidden shelf under the desk is super useful. Ignore my wooden floor – I’m sanding it *any day now*
