WHY?

If you’ve been overlooking Milton Keynes as a great place to put down roots, you may have been missing a trick. Sure, it’s biggest claim to fame might be six concrete cows and its grid-style road network (don’t get too excited) but you’ll be thanking those meticulously laid-out streets when you’re whizzing home at night while everyone else stagnates in traffic. Some of the UK’s finest urban planners built this Bucks city, but it’s not just function, there’s a surprising amount of style here too. Prove it, we hear you say? Challenge accepted.

EAT

Walls are so over rated! Wyld Dining gives new meaning to al-fresco eating, with locally sourced goodies cooked on an open fire and served in a secret woodland location. We’d tell you more, but then it wouldn’t be a secret, would it? Brasserie Blanc was launched as part of Raymond Blanc’s quest to provide the UK with great quality French food at pocket-friendly prices. It’s since been sold, but the name and great food remains.

Prefer your food with a view? Fourteen has plenty – 360° of them, to be exact. Tuck into a homemade Scotch egg with Branston pickle gel, or a perfectly seared fillet steak with chunky chips and herb and garlic grilled beef tomato, while admiring sweeping views across Bucks and Beds. There’s the Sky Bar attached too, if it’s cocktails and nibbles you’re after.

Unity Place Indian restaurant — Unity Place

Preaching to the WFH co-workers (and anyone else for that matter) Unity Place, features a lovely rooftop bar Sky Lounge for cocktails with a view. Can’t decide what you fancy? The Hub Milton Keynes is in the heart of the city and packed full of buzzy bars and restaurants, from Caribbean and Indian, to south-east Asian and Italian.

Paris House is just over the Beds border but we reckon it’s well worth the 20 min drive to this three AA-Rosette-winning restaurant. It’s all about the tasting menu here (£75 pp for four courses, or £121pp for six) with delights such as Buttermilk Crispy Chicken with burnt onion purée and caper mustard relish, and BBQ Heritage Beef with pickled mustard and beef fat onion.

SHOP

Centre:MK has plenty of high street brands when you want to do some damage – from TK Maxx to Reiss, Primark to Space NK. There’s a big John Lewis and – when you need a pick me up from all that shopping – every food craving is covered, from sushi and burgers to pastries and pizza.

Midsummer Place is another shopping centre, a few minutes’ walk away, with everything from cutsie Danish homewares brand, Søstrene Grene, to Levis and Lego, to TikTok-famous teen fave, Wingstop. It’s a quick drive out of the centre to the MK1 Shopping and Leisure Park, where you’ll find M&S, JD Sports, H&M and Next, loads of fast-food restaurants and a huge IKEA over the road. Plus Milton Keynes is home to the biggest Asda Supercentre in the UK, with 100,000 sq ft of space. Not so much a trolley dash as marathon.

For designer brands at bargain prices, worship at the shopping mecca that Bicester Village (40 mins drive). You’ll find independent shops and Farmers’ markets scattered around the local villages.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Horwood House is a deliciously indulgent spa hotel 20 mins from the city centre in the pretty village of Mursley. You can book pamper days or grab a girlfriend and book their ‘Girls’ Night In’ sleepover package, which includes an overnight stay, a pair of luxury PJs, a bottle of bubbles, and a voucher towards dinner. You can use the pool, sauna and steam room to your heart’s desire, and there’s a 25-minute spa treatment thrown in too. They’ll even load you up with brekkie before you leave. Bliss!

It’s a teensy bit of a cheat as it’s technically Beds, but Aqua Sana Forest Spa is just 30 mins from town, and too good not to mention. Set in acres of woodland, it’s actually part of Centre Parcs Woburn, but you don’t have to stay there to visit. You can choose from an impressive list of treatments and immersive spa experiences, from the Lava Sauna to the Ice Cave, to the Forest Rain Walk. Or just keep it simple with a dip in the pool, and an uninterrupted book-reading session on a heated lounge chair (excuse us while we sob gently with joy).

The Shenley Retreat is an oasis in the middle of the city, offering yoga, meditation, sound baths, beauty treatments, and detox and nutrition advice. Where do we sign up?

You’re not short of lovely places to wander here, as the city is ringed by parks and dotted with lakes, rivers and canals. The Parks Trust will give you the heads up on all the best places to explore, but the Canal Broadwalk is a great place to start. Follow the Grand Union Canal as it curves through several of the parks, taking in the Gyosei Art Trail along the way. If you’re feeling particularly perky, there’s also the 25-Mile Challenge Walk. Starting at Howe Park Wood, it takes in ancient woodland, lakes, historic buildings, the infamous Concrete Cows public art, before finishing at Caldecotte Lake.

COMMUNITY

If you don’t fish, perhaps it’s time you started. Angling insiders tell us the Milton Keynes Angling Association (MKAA) fishing permit is one of the best in the UK. Even if you come home sans fish, it’s a great way to relax and meet new people.

Fancy yourself as a swinger (not that kind, saucy)? Woburn Golf Club which has three championship courses to play on. It’s actually part of the sprawling Woburn Estate, which also includes Woburn Safari Park and Woburn Abbey – the home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford (currently getting a jolly good spruce up, and set to reopen in spring 2026). The estate is so vast it straddles Bucks and Beds, so we’re claiming it!

There are no end of clubs to join in the surrounding parks, from pétanque and archery, to cycling and rowing (the Parks’ Trust website has all the deets).

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

One thing’s for sure you’ll never be bored. This city is stuffed full of things to see and do. History buffs will love code-cracking HQ Bletchley Park, just 13 mins from the city centre. And it’s not just ciphers and secret agents – this summer they’re hosting the regular street food festival Eat Street MK and an open-air summer production of Twelfth Night.

Campbell Park is filled with public art and has a first-class cricket pitch, where you can watch local, county and exhibition matches for free from late spring to late summer. Willen Lake is the place to be in the hotter months, with all the water sports you can think of, including paddleboarding, kayaking, boat hire, open swimming and an inflatable obstacle course. We’ve got our beady eye on Cabana Boats, who hire out self-drive electric boats with built-in BBQ grills, so you can sizzle a steak while cruising round the lake. Genius.

Off water there’s plenty to keep you busy too, including adventure golf, axe throwing and a Treetops Extreme high ropes course.

Here’s one for the littlies – Gulliver’s Land Theme Park Resort has all the rides, play areas and events you can squeeze into one day (or more – they also have themed on-site accommodation). Advance tickets are £25, or £99 gets you a year’s entry to all the Gulliver’s locations (Rother Valley, Matlock Bath & Warrington), as well as the Dinosaur and Farm Park next door (£11 on its own).

Who needs pricey ski holidays when you’ve got the UK’s largest indoor snow centre on your doorstep? SnoZone has sledging, snowboarding and skiing on real snow. It’s just one destination in the Xscape leisure and entertainment complex, which also includes the Hollywood Bowl, Adventure Golf, Gravity trampoline park, Escape Hunt rooms and iFly World Indoor Skydiving Centre. It’s a few minutes’ drive to Ninja Warrior UK Adventure Park, inspired by the hit telly show, with loads of climbing, balancing and swinging challenges.

Award-winning Woburn Safari Park has hundreds of exotic and endangered animals, from tigers and giraffes and the perennial crowd-pleasers, meerkats and red pandas. You can book their newest attraction when you get there – mini electric Range Rovers for kids aged 3-9 (£12.99 for around 20 minutes of driving).

Silverstone is less than 30 mins away and for autumn 2025 they’ve just launched a high-performance outdoor go-karting experience, so everyone can get their Lando Norris on. It’s lights out and away we go!

CULTURE

Milton Keynes, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover, is a bubbling hotspot of all things arty. The Milton Keynes Theatre is a local gem that attracts shows fresh from London’s West End, including The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, Calamity Jane and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Other big productions coming up this year include the new Percy Jackson musical, Ghost Stories, The Bodyguard and Mary Poppins.

Right next door to the theatre you’ll find the MK Gallery, where £60 a year gets you free entry and priority booking for workshops. They run three major exhibitions a year and show classic films in The Sky Room cinema. You may have just missed the iconic Andy Warhol exhibition, celebrating the King of Pop Art, but the galley frequently exhibits work that’s been shown in the Tate, MOMA New York and the Guggenheim. We told you there was more to MK than you might have thought.

On the west side of MK, artists, ceramicists, jewellery designers, writers and more gather at 17th century manor house Westbury Arts Centre. A hub of local creativity, there are regular pro-led workshops for the public and school groups, where you can try your hand at everything from portrait painting to beekeeping. Whoever said MK was boring?

It takes just over 20 mins to get to The Arches Theatre in Clifton Reynes, so named because it’s tucked under the arches of an old railway bridge. You can’t catch a train any more, but you can catch something way more fun instead – from Oasis tribute bands to productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, to Peter Rabbit puppet shows.

The Milton Keynes International Festival runs every two years over the summer with a jam-packed calendar of theatre, dance, music and arts installations. The Milton Keynes Fringe Festival runs alongside the main festival and champions new artists.

Milton Keynes may be a newbie city, but people have been living here since medieval times. This rich history is explained in the Milton Keynes Museum, where you’ll find everything from a recreated Victorian high street (made from salvaged original shopfronts) to Iggy, the 180-million-year-old Jurassic marine reptile, who was uncovered by workmen digging under Caldecotte Lake.

Good value to be fair – house prices in Milton Keynes averaged £363,602 last year. The majority were detached homes, selling for £543,293. Semis-sold for £343,522, with terraced houses £291,483.

NURSERIES

Milton Keynes covers a big area – 55 square miles – but that’s good news for you when it comes to schools, as it means there are loads to choose from. At our last count we found a rather impressive 37 nurseries (including those attached to primaries) – check the city council schools directory to see which are in each area. Acorn at New Bradwell is a small, open plan nursery with a Forest School attached, rated Outstanding by Ofsted, and also in the Outstanding category is Little Tinkers@CharlesWarren, to the south of the city, and Aristotots Nursery School.

SCHOOLS

There are 27 infant schools, 12 junior schools, 57 primary schools and 17 secondary schools in Milton Keynes, also listed on the city council schools directory. Caroline Haslett Primary School has a motto of “nothing but the best is good enough”, which is apt as Oftsed rated them Outstanding. Brooklands Farm Primary School also hits the Ofsted Outstanding mark, as does Priory Rise to the west of the city. Sought after Outstanding secondaries include White Spire School in Bletchley and Watling Academy.

Milton Keynes also has some great independent schools, including Ackley Wood School, Wicken, (co-ed) which takes students all the way from nursery and junior school, to senior school, and on to sixth form. Webber Independent School takes co-ed students all the way from Little Webber nursery (6 months to 5 years) through Prep, and right up to Year 11. Thornton College is a day and boarding school for girls aged 3-18 years, while Baytu Ilm is an Islamic secondary school for boys aged 11-16.

Broughton Manor Preparatory School (co-ed) has an outstanding nursery from 6 mths and a Pre-Prep for ages 3 – 7 yrs, then students move on to Prep until Y11. Deemed Excellent by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, Swanbourne House is a co-ed boarding and day school for 3 – 13 year olds, 23 mins from the centre of Milton Keynes (read our review). From Y8 students move on to esteemed independent senior schools, such as Stowe School, 35 mins away in Buckingham, as well as Eton College and Cheltenham Ladies’ College.

BEST KEPT SECRET

Everyone knows Milton Keynes is a city, but did you know it’s actually a forest city, which means greenery galore! It’s teeming with parks and waterways and more trees than you can literally shake a stick at – more than 20 million of them, in fact.

COMMUTE

Time your trip just right and you can drive into Oxford in 1 hr and central London in as little as 1 hr 15 mins (although peak traffic can double that), making it a great base if you love getting out and about at the weekend. Regular trains will zip you from Milton Keynes Central to London Euston in as little as 33 mins, or 1 hr 30 mins to Oxford. Venturing up north? You could be pulling into Manchester Piccadilly in under two hours.
