Sun’s out, and suddenly we’ve come over all Tom and Barbara from&nbsp;The Good Life&nbsp;(minus the chicken coop and compost loo… for now). And since we’re now experts in seasonal veg &#8211; yes, we’re those people banging on about courgette gluts and the genius of the no-dig revolution &#8211; it’s only right that our restaurant choices follow suit. Because if you’re going to eat outside, you might as well eat&nbsp;from&nbsp;outside too. Preferably with a chilled glass of something crisp in hand and the smug satisfaction that your broad beans were plucked from the soil mere metres away.



Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire have dug deep to deliver a bumper crop of establishments where the kitchen garden is far more than just a photogenic backdrop – from walled gardens bursting with basil to garden terraces made for long, lazy lunches, and plates so fresh you can ditch your nutritionist, stat.



These are the restaurants (and one or two cafés and farmhouses) where the kitchen garden isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s the secret ingredient. Because flavour, as any gardener will tell you, starts at the root.

Tucked away down a dirt track near Cassington (just five miles from Oxford, though it feels like the South of France), Worton Kitchen Garden is one of the city’s best-kept culinary secrets – and we’re just about ready to spill. What started in 2005 with a ploughed field and two polytunnels has blossomed into a market garden-meets-restaurant where practically everything is grown on-site. 



At the helm is Simon Spence, whose wood-fired sourdough alone is worth the pilgrimage – made with 100% organic flour and served warm enough to make you giddy with carb-lust. The restaurant is a Provençal-style dream: tables scattered between flowers and fruit trees, happy bees humming, wine glasses clinking while the menu is hyper-seasonal and super veg-forward. We’re talking flavour-packed, slow-grown, Soil Association-certified gorgeousness, with regenerative farming at its heart and a proper sense of joy on the plate. Expect foraged herbs, heritage leaves, edible flowers, and the kind of ‘oh-my-God-what-is-that’ ingredients (hi, ground elder) that you’ll immediately want to grow at home.



Highlights? Crackling with apple sauce, globe artichoke with hollandaise, cod with lentils and wild garlic – and yes, even the nettle soup is next-level. It’s rustic, it’s real, and it’s ridiculously good. The kind of place you stumble across once, tell absolutely everyone about, and still feel smug that you knew about it first. Proving once and for all that compost is the new caviar.

Belmond’s Le Manoir doesn’t need much of an intro – it’s the legendary Raymond Blanc’s two Michelin-starred baby, after all – but beyond the fine dining and French flair served up in a genteel English manor, lies one of the most beautiful kitchen gardens you’ll ever clap eyes on. Founded in 1984 (the same year it landed that coveted duo of stars, which it’s held onto ever since), Le Manoir is set in a postcard-perfect manor house in Great Milton, Oxfordshire. And when it comes to the garden, this is horticulture on a whole new level – two acres of immaculately groomed potager kitchen garden, over 90 types of veg, 70 kinds of herbs, a Japanese tea garden and even an orchard. It’s like the Chelsea Flower Show met&nbsp;MasterChefand they decided to move in together.



The food? Naturally, it’s exquisite – seasonal, precise, and plated with the kind of elegance that makes you sit up straighter. But what really makes it sing is the plot-to-plate philosophy: everything that&nbsp;can&nbsp;be grown,&nbsp;is&nbsp;– all plucked mere hours (sometimes minutes) before landing on your plate. Menus shift with the seasons, but expect the likes of heritage beetroot with horseradish sorbet, or homemade gnocchi with green asparagus and wild garlic. It’s delicate, dazzling – and yes, eye-wateringly expensive. Want the full feast? For £230 a head, you could (and probably should) go all in on the six-course tasting menu.



Just note: nothing about this is casual. It’s not a drop-in-after-a-dog-walk kind of place. But for a blow-the-budget, once-in-a-lifetime lunch? This is&nbsp;the&nbsp;one. Just book early – and maybe iron something.

It’s no surprise that The Greyhound has become one of Bucks’ most talked-about foodie hotspots. Housed in a 17th-century coaching inn in Beaconsfield Old Town, this deeply charming six-year-old restaurant is run by husband-and-wife dream team Daniel Crump and Margriet Vandezande-Crump – whose fine-dining pedigree includes Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Petrus and Trinity in Clapham.



The cooking is sublime but the restaurant’s growing commitment to homegrown ingredients is also impressive. The Greyhound is quietly cultivating a pretty dreamy kitchen garden, and while it’s still a work in progress (green thumbs crossed), it’s already doing the business on the plate. Out on the al fresco terrace – a fragrant little haven dotted with herbs and flowers – you’ll find beds brimming with lemon verbena, sorrel, basil, hyssop, chamomile, allium and even a bit of glamorous red amaranth. It’s a pollinator’s paradise and exactly the sort of place you want to linger over a glass of wine and mentally move in.



The dishes are fresh as they come, loaded with straight-from-the-earth goodness and that kind of delicate creativity that gets restaurant inspectors all hot under the collar – no wonder it won AA Restaurant of the Year in 2024 and just scooped Best Restaurant in Bucks/Oxon in the Muddy Awards 2025. Standouts? Hay-poached sand carrot with dukkah cream cheese and carrot sorbet, and Icelandic cod with wild garlic, haricot bean purée, lemon and courgette. We’re salivating just thinking about it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tucked into the Chiltern Hills just outside Great Missenden, Peterley Manor Farm is the kind of farm-to-fork haven you turn up to in wellies and leave from feeling like you could run River Cottage. Well, maybe.



Run by the very aptly named Brill family since the early ’80s, this once-dilapidated poultry farm has blossomed into a pick-your-own paradise complete with a farm shop, plant nursery, and – most importantly for our ravenous Muddy purposes – a cracking café dishing up seasonal plates with max flavour and minimum faff.



The Barn Kitchen,&nbsp;opened in 2021, is housed in a former tractor shed – a fact that only adds to its salvaged wood, rustic-chic vibe. Menus ebb and flow with the seasons (and whatever’s looking good in the fields), with a hyper-local, rooted-in-the-soil approach that we love. Think beetroot and British bean falafels, smoked Potash Farm chicken tikka, and asparagus, goat’s curd and wild garlic salsa verde on mozzarella – plus whatever the team has plucked out of the ground that morning.



On sunny days, nab a spot in the herb-fringed courtyard. If not, cosy up by the log burner inside with a flat white and a wedge of something homemade. And if you’re lucky enough to grab a seat at one of their Friday night small plates evenings, prepare for dreamy British tapas, gorgeous flatbreads, cocktails and fairy lights.

Picture this: a jaw-droppingly gorgeous Jacobean mansion tucked away in 85 acres of pristine estate, with 3,000 acres of Oxfordshire parkland for a backyard. It&#8217;s the kind of place where Downton Abbey would feel totally at home, yet somehow it mixes old-world grandeur with a slick, modern edge that’s bang on trend. The Cotswolds A-list treat it like their second home – and can you blame them? From Sharan Pasricha, the genius behind Ennismore, we’d expect no less.&nbsp;



If you’ve girded your wallet to dine here, you’ll be eating fresh – they have an entire walled area devoted to growing the freshest, most vibrant produce for their menus. Picture chefs stepping out of the garden, plucking organic veg, herbs, and edible flowers, and turning them into dishes that are almost too pretty to eat – and we use ‘almost’ advisedly because, well, resistance is futile.



And the menu? At The Brasserie, it’s all about luxe British classics like rich Oxford cheddar soufflé and a beef Wellington that’ll make you question every other version you&#8217;ve had (yes, it’s kid-friendly until 8pm, so little ones can indulge too). Meanwhile, The Billiards Room (adults only, darling) whisks you away with dim sum and roast duck that practically melt in your mouth, all served in velvet-clad surroundings that scream decadence.



For something a little more laid-back, The Glasshouse is the family-friendly spot where wood-fired grills and sharing plates steal the show. And, of course, the kitchen garden’s magic is woven into nearly every bite. In the chocolate-box village of Fyfield, The White Hart is what happens when a 15th-century coaching inn gets a seriously seasonal and garden-grown goodness glow-up. Think vaulted ceilings, flagstone floors, oak beams, roaring fires, and a wine list that’s frankly dangerous. But the real show-stealer? The kitchen garden out back, a full-on flavour playground – packed with edible flowers, heirloom veg, and leafy things that make you feel smug just looking at them. Everything’s grown just steps from the kitchen, so it’s basically still photosynthesising when it hits your plate.



Chef-patron Mark Chandler has been championing local and homegrown long before it was trendy. The menu changes with the seasons (of course it does) and the garden makes itself known in everything from cheddar and wild garlic croquettes to pan-roast chicken with charred leek, asparagus, morels and black garlic that tastes like spring on a plate.&nbsp;And if you’ve got the littles in tow? The kids&#8217; menu is full of proper favourites – mac ‘n’ cheese, sausage and mash, cod bites – but done the White Hart way, which means still wildly better than most grown-up pub grub.

Set amidst 100 acres of Oxfordshire countryside,&nbsp;Soho Farmhouse&nbsp;is where muddy boots meet oat milk flat whites – with a side of A-lister nonchalance. You’ll need to be a Soho House member or overnight guest or have useful friends who can get you in to breeze past the gates. Once you&#8217;re through, it’s heaven in a Barbour jacket. Think roaring fires, alfresco bathtubs, vintage bikes, and an almost comical number of ridiculously well-groomed dogs trotting about like they own the place (they probably do).



Amongst the celebs and Cotswolds chic, there’s one understated showstopper: the&nbsp;kitchen garden.&nbsp;Dreamed up by organic guru Anna Greenland (yes, she of Le Manoir fame), it’s a riot of edible blooms, heirloom veg and fresh herbs – the kind of stuff that makes chefs weak at the knees. You’ll find its bounty popping up across all menus, from Brit comfort food in the Main Barn to umami-packed Japanese at Pen Yen and sourdough pizzas with a view in the Hay Barn.



It’s laid-back, seasonal eating with zero fuss and all the flavour – earthy, elegant, and grown mere metres from your plate. And yes, you&nbsp;will&nbsp;take 57 photos of the garden and briefly consider jacking in city life to become a carrot whisperer.
