Summer supper clubs

Can't be bothered to cook? Yeah, same here. Get in on the pop-up supper club action across Bucks & Oxon this summer- share tables, conversation and seriously impressive food.

Yafo Kitchen, Wantage on Sat 15 Jun, Witney on Sat 13 Jul

Witney-based event catering and private dining venture The Yafo Kitchen focuses on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours at its supper clubs. I haven’t eaten here but I’m liking the sound of its trip down to Garlands Farm in Wantage for its fish and seafood pop-up with a Mediterranean style menu of mackerel with rose and Harissa rub, stuffed squid, hummus and more (Sat 15, £35). Or, Yafo Kitchen is back in Witney at UE Coffee with a meaty menu of chicken wings and lamb (Sat 13 Jul, £35). All BYOB which keeps costs down nicely.

Smoke & Thyme, Faringdon, Sat 22 Jun

Young chef/blogger Jack Greenall runs super groovado supper clubs around Oxon. Too late to book for his new one-off day party Bacchanal, a fairytale/ mythical/ Alice in Wonderland fandango with open fire cooking, a speakeasy-style bar, outlandish characters and costumes. (Sat 8 Jun, £40), but in two weeks he’s back again at Roves Farm, near Faringdon, with a ‘field to fork’ menu using meat-reared on the farm for the venue’s first supper club season (Sat 22 Jun, £35). And finally, the popular pay what you want supper clubs will return for July, dates TBC.

Prema’s Kitchen, Sat 22 Jun, Sat 6 Jul Marlow; & Wed 5, Sat 15 Jun, Wed 3 Jul, Cookham

Prema’s Kitchen has been on the supper club scene for a while, serving authentic Sri Lankan grub at Old Butchers Wine Cellar in Cookham. It recently started hosting supper clubs at Coopers Roastery & Coffee Bar, Marlow, and will be popping up again on Sat 22 Jun and Sat 6 Jul. If you fancy a trip over the border to Berkshire (take your passport and watch out for the locals) the dates are Wed 5, Sat 15 Jun, Wed 3 Jul. Supper clubs consist of canapés, a street food starter, two meat/seafood curries, three veggie dishes and dessert. £45. Tickets here.

Native Feasts, Marlow, Sun 9 Jun; Watlington, Sat 13 Jul

Party at Clayton’s Marlow! Native Feasts are popping up on the outdoor terrace with a Bajan BBQ of Jerk chicken, salt beef curry and more, cooked by Michelin starred chef Chris Godfrey. There’ll also be DJs and a rum shack serving cocktails, punch and frozen Daiquiris (Sun 9 Jun, £15). And, for July, there’s the rather mysterious sounding Nightjar Carnival, a sensory dining experience with dance, theatre and food, set in the woodland and orchards at Babylon Nurseries, Oxon. Don’t forget to wear a mask (Sat 13 Jul, £80).

Durban Spice – Sat 15, Fri 21, Sat 22 Jun, 27 Jul, 17 Aug

We tested out Durban Spice recently and it’s fantastic – review to come shortly! In the meantime, what you need to know is that it’s a supper club run by Durban native Shabir Ally in his home in Wheatley, mid Oxfordshire. The menu is revealed on the night but you can expect a five course seasonal menu of fragrant and authentic South African food made with top quality local produce (Sat 15, Fri 21 Jun). Durban Spice is also running three course Bunny Chow nights, authentic curry served in a hollowed loaf of bread (Sat 8, Sat 22 Jun, 27 Jul, 17 Aug). And, brand new for summer, Seafood Nights, promising a spice explosion (Sat 6, Sat 13 Jul, Fri 16, Fri 30 Aug) . BYOB. Tickets here.

The Orangery, Blenheim Palace, Thurs 13 Jun & Thurs 11 Jul

Go pop-up posh with a Champagne supper club at The Orangery, a Laurent Perrier reception with canapés on the terrace overlooking the stunning Italian gardens, a three course tasting dinner with paired tipple and coffee and chocolate to polish it off (Thurs 13 Jun). Or you can tour the International Garden Photographer of the Year Exhibition, showing at Blenheim for the first time from 7 Jun – 20 Aug, followed by a talk and three course dinner (Thurs 11 Jul).

Miserden greenhouses, Glos, Sat 15 Jun & Fri 9 Aug

Fancy a trip out? Miserden greenhouses in Gloucestershire are no stranger to the supper club scene and hosts loads of different pop ups in the Garden Café. Supper clubs coming this summer are Poco Culina, six courses of Western Mediterranean food cooked with authentic spices, herbs and dressings (Sat 15 Jun) and Rubols Fusion Kitchen– run by Cotswolds-based cousins Ruby and Holly. Food is a mix of Mexican & Middle Eastern flavours creating fusion dishes such as the Shawarrito (it’s a shawarma wrap and burrito hybrid FYI).

The Granary Watlington, Watlington, Fri 28 Jun, Fri 19 Jul, Fri 16 Aug

I’m a big fan of The Granary and its hard-won reputation for its superb cheese and deli offering. It has three supper clubs on the bill this summer serving an Indian inspired menu of homemade samosas, Southern Indian fish curry and fresh chutneys with a British twist for dessert- fresh strawberries, double cream & meringues. £29 per person.

Makan Malaysia, Drifters Coffee House, Henley, Sat 6 Jul

Childhood friends Sue and Kat grew up in Malaysia before moving to the UK for university over 10 years ago. Makan Malaysia was started last year and hosts supper clubs in Reading, London and now Henley. Tickets include a whopping six courses and a glass of fizz on arrival. Tickets here

Secret Supper Society, Somerton, Fri 21, Sat 22, Sun 23, Fri 28, Sat 29 Jun, Fri 12, Fri 19 Jul

If you go down to the woods today (well, on Sun 23 Jun) you’ll find Secret Supper Society, in Somerton, Oxon, with its new Woodland Supper – a large communal table with five courses of sharing dishes. Or, if al fresco dining isn’t your bag, there are loads of summer dates for the supper club’s Restaurant Nights; each date promises a completely new menu inspired by the season, is BYOB and includes tea, coffee, bread and homemade chocolates. Cash only.
